I honestly think it's totally dependent on each person. Some people value their freedom a lot more than security and therefore are more inclined towards a freelance position. Others need security and so they will sacrifice some freedom. I have tried both paths and realized I appreciate the freedom of freelancing way more than I need security. So the freelance thing can be more work sometimes but the perks are worth it to me
This LI post was a unicorn — kind of an echo of a distant past when star CDs would get million dollar bonuses to sign up and then million dollar exit payoffs when it didn’t work out 6 months later (swear this totally happened).
Anyway rest of the post was how the freelance CD was asked by the agency 20+ times to go full time and said no, each time for the reasons shown in the excerpt — until the agency created a position for the person, without the CD strings attached. To which I can only deduce a) the freelancer must be a hell of a powerhouse, b) they must have had a hell of a relationship with the smitten CD, and c) trying to draw any useful lessons from this circumstance is futile because, to come full circle, it’s a total unicorn.
Not in my opinion, no. Freelancing is being in constant doubt about whether or not you'll have a job in the next month. If you're okay with that struggle, there are nothing but perks to being a freelancer - you work according to your own schedule and you set your own deadlines for the clients you work with. It's been a love-hate relationship for me, but I'll choose it over working in an agency any day.
Let’s also remind ourselves that this LI post was written by the person who now runs an agency using freelance creatives (and most likely FT creatives doing side hustles) with the promise that said creatives will never have to have any kind of client contact. So there’s a bit of an agenda in spreading this story.
It’s a pretty smart model though. But I highly doubt in 2024 anyone is being allowed to pull this shit inside a regular agency.
I have worked freelance before and it is very difficult. I just feel like there are so many unknowns and it can be very stressful when you lose work and therefore lose income. Not to mention the tax portion of it all and trying to keep up with all that.
