Go. If the only time your current employer is going to entertain promoting you, paying you more, etc is when you threaten to leave, it’ll be a long difficult road you’ll have to forever cross to get ahead. I don’t subscribe to this method of promotion but there are many companies and firms that do. As you mentioned, there’s a myriad of reasons why you want to leave in the first place. Remember those and go flourish and be great at the new place! Change is difficult at first but you’ll be great. G’luck!
Of course! Happy to help. G’luck. Would love to hear what you decided to do!
Pro
Agree you should leave, because the empty promises about things changing at current company are just that. And they’re going to distrust you a bit going forward.
However, if the counter offer takes you above what comp would be at the new place, might not be a bad idea to say something like “hey, really excited about the opportunity to join newco but my current company just offered me xyz comp improvements to stay. I’m ready for a change and my preference is newco, but would you be able to match or beat their updated comp package so my decision is financially justified?”
Thank you so much!! This is really helpful.
Take the other job. Your current employer will just see you as a liability/flight risk moving forward. Trust has been lost
I read once that around 70% of people who accept counter offers leave within 12 months
If you want to leave your job for a myriad of reasons, why stay? I know change can be hard, but you were looking for a reason. Unless you saw major red flags for the new company, I'd definitely go. Also, check out askamanager.org for her advice on counteroffers - generally they're not a good idea.
This is very helpful! Thanks.
Ditto all of the responses. If it were only money, it would be an easy decision but there is likely other reasons you decided to look elsewhere in the first place. Does the difference in pay compensate those reasons?
It might not. I am not sure. I just feel so overstretched and we are seriously understaffed. They say things are about to change etc but I feel like I’ve heard that before. I definitely don’t feel valued at times and I wasn’t actively looking for this new job but I think everyone here is right. I should just move on.
I had a similar situation, except I didn’t really want to leave my current job other than for compensation reasons and the counteroffer was good and I took it. Been there 15 months since and still going strong. However, if you have so many other reasons you want to leave and the new job sounds as good as it does, I would say you should take it.
EXACT same boat. Was the toughest decision but I’m in my notice period right now. I had already mentally checked-out before any new factors played a role, so while I thought SUPER hard about it I ultimately pulled the trigger. If it was the wrong call, was the wrong call and I’ll learn. I was unhappy and money dangling made me reconsider for sure, but I had to look beyond that.
Exactly! It’s sooo hard. I do love my colleagues but the company culture is just never going to do it for me. Thanks for sharing your experience and good look in your new job!
Leave. Your current place is offering more but will expect more from you. It never ends well. If they interested in retaining you, they would’ve made the effort before.
I agree with the others, as well. Time to move on and grow your career. It’s not uncommon that you needed to look elsewhere to increase comp, and given you have other factors that also drove you to shop around, trust your gut and enjoy the new adventure!
Agree with all those who say leave. You will forevermore be viewed in a negative light. They may want you right now because you are filling a gap they can’t bridge at the moment . . . but they will eventually. Then there will be no reason to keep you, and you will have missed out on this new job. GO!!
Thanks for posting this! I’m in a similar position. Made a decision to lateral from a pretty toxic firm environment to a different firm with a culture that I think will be a better fit. Super difficult because I like a lot of the people at my current firm and felt valued and they made a very strong counteroffer but I keep going back to the reasons I’m leaving and I know they will not change. The fear of going somewhere new is definitely strong too but I don’t think that fear of that unknown is a good reason to stay somewhere that is comfortable but kind of miserable. It’s been really helpful to read these responses!
Good luck to you too!
Take the job. Stay focused on the fundamentals of why you want to leave your current job and why the new company is appealing to you. Money is a short term appeasement and will not change how you feel about your current job.
Do not take the counter offer. Do. Not.
Staying because of a counteroffer rarely works out. Before long the extra comp won’t matter and you will be looking again. Take the new position.
What did you end up doing?!? I’m in the same
Boat now and so confused 😵💫
You made the choice to look for other employment instead of just asking for a raise. It’s not a money question. I say leave. If you take the money, you’ll be right back where you are now but with the company trusting you less
Solid advice on all of the above. I personally believe in accepting new challenges and I think if you can see the longterm benefit of transitioning to the new opportunity, I’d say moveon.org I believe in being “valued” wherever I choose to devote my time talent energy and effort. Don’t waste your time, don’t “allow” someone else to waste your time , and don’t waste their time either. It’s all about mutual respect. Much success to you and please share your decision and update us 6mo or 1yr from now. BEST & CONGRATS
