I got my EA a couple years ago and have been preparing taxes, corp and partnerships mostly. I also have a great bookkeeping gig. I’ve discovered I will not work more than 40 hpw for someone other than myself. I turned down a FT offer with the tax firm I contract at and have another opportunity to move to a company where I could grow my career in the controller direction but would have to quit everything I’m doing now, personal clients included. Advice? Controller path or tax path? Thanks!!

Controller is very different from tax. I work no more than 40 hours a week and manage everything from AR, AP, général ledger, costing, etc. Do you like a variety of work?

Any thoughts around how to use M&A tax skills for the better good? I’m a CPA and originally got into this for a stable / interesting job, but in the long-term I’d like to do something that either influences drafting of tax legislation or helps the public (however naive that may sound). Perhaps I’ve gotten too introspective during the pandemic. Don’t really want to go back for a JD and aside from keeping a roof over my head I’m not very motivated by money. Anyone else have similar ideas?

Thank you!

I am looking to make a career change to HR. I currently make 75K as a sales and development coach. I had a recent offer for a state government position in a talent acquisition role but I’d be taking a $25K pay cut. I am extremely over qualified for the position but it could possibly be a stepping stone and gives me the time to acquire SHRM certifications and possibly start taking classes to get my MBA. My question is those currently in an HR role, would this move make sense to you?
