Regardless of the market, if a project is denied final funding or funding gets pulled last minute, all staffing is put on hold or dismissed. Even if you signed your offer, the company still reserves the right to make you redundant if funding is lost. Sorry about that, it still burns.
Sadly this just happened to me as we speak. Was on contract for what was supposed to have been a long term recurring contract with possible conversion to a fulltime position, but sadly never reached that point. Due to lack of further funding and budget cuts, they decided not to renew the contract just a few weeks short of what would have been a full 1 year of working there as a contractor. Sadly that's the nature of the beast in today's volatile job market, which is why we need to be prepared for whatever circumstances are thrown our way.
I encountered a similar situation with a well-known product-based company. After successfully navigating through five technical rounds, I received verbal confirmation from HR that I had passed the interview process and that they would proceed with the onboarding procedures. However, I was subsequently ghosted without any further communication.
Wow...that was really unprofessional of their HR department to not at least send you a courtesy rejection email or letter. That's the majority of HR departments for you...you're just a number to them.
Welcome to the wonderful world of "at will employment". A job offer is no guarantee that the position will manifest itself given such circumstances. I've certainly been there many times and although it is very sad and upsetting, there's nothing you can really do about it other than to accept it for what it is and keep looking for other opportunities.
What's the name of the organization?
That does happen unfortunately. I had that happen to me once where everything was ready to go, but a VP in Germany decided he didn't want to give final approval to signing off on the job.
