I have kind of a similar path, I now work in ad agencies but prior to working in one I literally didn’t even know they existed. I was a journalist, went into PR and now brand strat - I frame it as curiosity, a desire to learn and ambition to want to face the unknown and the confidence to actually do it.
What VP 1 said, what’s your story? You can connect the dots and make it compelling, but you’re already going to catch people’s eye, the ambition and courage to do something completely unexpected based on what you studied is already interesting!
Love the framing of curiosity. I often feel like I just ended up in this field, but I like it because I like to learn new things.
While I don’t have a similar background, i thought I’d share my thoughts.
Hearing this question, I think it’s real and honest to say you landed into it (I’d add a bit more color about “how” you landed, aka did you know someone you introduced you to your first role or what caught you into the first role).
However, I’d change the question in my response to be less “how you got here” and change it into “why do you stay here.”
I think people can land somewhere all the time. But if you are in an interview in this same field you landed in, you are making a conscious decision to stay. There is a reason you are staying here vs finding something more aligned with your educational background.
Love the framing of "why" on this one. Very wise and a very good point.
Think of yourself as if you were one of your clients and create a narrative for yourself and your career. What skills did you study in college that you realized apply to comms? How did you realize it’s a good fit for you? If you don’t have a strong or obvious story, take some artistic liberties.
This is one of those moments I suppose it is acceptable to li...give some artistic liberties.
Transferrable skills! No matter what you studied in college and in life, you have learned skills that directly relate to your career. My career began in education, specializing in autism; shifted to marketing and HR (the connection between the two are fascinating). For me, everything led to communication. Knowing who your target audience is, tells you the best way to ensure they not only receive the message, but understand your point of view (aka controlling the narrative).
