You can't collect sis and SSDI at the same time.
I'm thinking the survivor will takeover the deceased spouse's benefits and drop the SSDI.
^^^ This i know to be a fact. i had that occur with a client
I'm assuming the client will receive the higher of the two. I read somewhere that there's some kind of loophole if the surviving spouse is between age 50-60, is already collecting ssdi, and the spouse passes away. It said something about collecting both, but with a temporary reduction (like 28.1% or something) in survivor benefits until client reaches full retirement age and then it all switches to full survivor benefits at client's full retirement age and ssdi is dropped. I've also read that ssdi automatically converts to social security retirement benefits at age 65, but benefit amount doesn't change (it's just a "re-titling"). I am totally confused and hesitant to rely on the social security office to tell her straight, but that's looking like the only option.
