I’d personally take a role that would teach me skills to become a business owner. Compensation analysis doesn’t sound like strategic finance to me nor very useful for learning how to run a biz. I’ve been in a similar position at a tech firm where they billed my work as strat fin but it was actually more FP&A. With that said tho, is internal mobility big at the new firm? Are there a lot of other roles there that you could one day potentially move to to broaden your skillset? Are there a lot of smart folks you can learn from? If not, personally i would choose option one then
Im personally in favor of the latter but depends on your likelihood of getting into a decent buyside shop that will give you the operational exposure or is just another shop that mainly rely on financial engineering to buy and hold. I think you’re pretty sold on the idea of starting your own business, as so am I. Hence, I skipped the PE route and took a cushier job to do my own thing on the side
Also PE as a biz cycle in the next 2 yrs is very unpredictable as of this moment given the rates. A lot of smaller shops are struggling out there
Frankly speaking I see PE as a sort of insurance where if I don’t have anything else I’ll do PE and have that under my belt. I also have a serious interest in owning my own business down the line and see PE as a way to just get operational exposure. That said I was thinking either
1) continue this path to PE and take in all the money for 2 years and quit to do whatever or
2) go into some cushy industry role, coast, and just build a business on the side from there
Would love any perspective from anyone here who has a perspective on weighing this
