I have been striking out in interviews. They are all the STAR questions. One that really negatively impacts me is “Tell me about a time you struggled at something and overcame it.” This is the equivalent of the old “Tell me your weakness” question. No matter how I answer I have to admit I struggled at something at work, and I can tell by their reactions they are using that against me. I always try to make it sound impressive how I overcame it, but it doesn’t work for me.

I would use the same approach as the "What is your weakness?". I usually say I am analytical ( which is also a strength). I would say the following and you can apply this to your specific situation.

“One area I’m mindful of is that I can be very analytical. While that’s a strength, there are times I can over-analyze smaller details. When that happens, I intentionally step back and refocus on the bigger picture. That helps me stay aligned with deadlines, prioritize effectively, and delegate tasks when appropriate.”

The thing about interviews is that you can never really know what has helped you or what has sunk you. And even the reactions of interviewers can be puzzling, as they're more or less trained to be inscrutable. It's possible your answers are just fine, but other people are doing a bit better. It's easy to forget that it's always a competition, and you can do a great job and still come in second to someone else who was having a better day. Just be determined to win it all next time.

I always tell myself that you don't have to the best ever.. just the best out of the bunch of people that showed up

What if I say I don't have any weaknesses, I'm perfect☺️

I would encourage you to come up with one answer to this question, memorize it, and repeat it every time. Ultimately, you can't really determine if it will or won't help you before you give it. And for some interviewers, it'll be a perfect answer, and for others, it won't land. But that's OK. Just be yourself and answer the best you can and try not to overthink it.

Yes, I would not use an example where you failed to follow protocol to the company’s detriment (lost a sale).

I struggle with that question too. I reframe it around learning speed, not failure. I talk about an unfamiliar situation, what I did to adapt, and the outcome. Interviewers usually respond better to growth than vulnerability alone.

Hi All, I'm looking for Product folks who'd be interested in chatting with me about their experience in Google, the products they work on, the journey into Google, what they look for while hiring, what kind of skills will be an asset. Not applying now but planning the best way of getting there. Thanks!

Hi! I have a quick question and could use some advice:

I have 1 job offer that is an hour away and pays 45k, after negotiations (Research Associate Position at a University) .

I have just interviewed for a position closer to home and a base salary of 65k, but haven’t heard back from them in about 2 days (He said he would make a decision by yesterday and I’ve reached out).
I have to decide on the first offer by Thursday but I haven’t heard back from the second yet. Thoughts on next move?

Has anyone ever asked to renegotiate their salary after starting a job? I’m 2 months into my new job and I have far more responsibilities than what I was told. It’s a lot different than what was relayed in the posting and during the interviews. Additionally, they hired my counter part in as a senior manager which is at least $30k more than what I make. My peer has more experience so I expect that but I feel that I should be paid more, however I don’t want to leave a bad impression… any advice?

I recently had an interview with a very promising pre-IPO company in the AI/ML space for a SE leadership position. The interview feedback was better than I expected, but with a twist. They have already given the offer to someone else, but they still want to bring me on board and they asked me what I would like to do. I am in the process of gathering more info, but it is tempting to ask about pivoting into product management. What would you do in this situation?

A good friend of mine graduated from Parsons this past summer, has degrees in Journalism and French, is a talented photographer and designer (which I feel I have a pretty decent eye for after working at a design-driven branding agency for half a decade).
