I have kinda of gone a more technology route with my career. I am afraid of going through CPA exam then having to take a lower paying P/ job gain experience to be liscensed . Does cpa always equal more money ? Is it worth it after you’ve crossed over to more technology type roles?

I carry a CPA, but have done more tech work my whole career. I haven’t experienced any compensation issues. If anything it gives you a differentiator that your peers might not have.

What LOS are you in?

You usually don’t need your year of experience after passing the exams. If you’ve ever worked a year under a CPA it counts in most states.

like

Def dm me of you want the whole story

I see it says you are a tax manager so I assume you are in tax. I worked in Tax for a while and then shifted to technology after going back and getting a computer science degree. I had always planned in getting my CPA but never did and have been exempted by my firm from the requirement due to my status as a "technologist". I understand the need for CPA designation in PA work but I don't think it is as applicable in the tax line if service as other lines of service. With that said if you want to focus on tax technology there is probably a value still. If you want to move on from tax and into more IT style roles I don't think there is much value. I have found it challenging to shake the tax background when talking to people about more IT focused roles. You would be better served by getting some technology focused certification like cloud (AWS, Azure, etc) or ERP certification.

I would say that it was but time will tell. It opened interviewing doors for sure and is truly a differentiator among peers. Helped me get good raises in PA ( I came in as an experienced hire) If you want to focus on tax technology or even try to broaden out to finance technology, it will give you a leg up on other candidates. It also really comes down to the individual places you are trying to work. Some places are really trying to update and move forward while others just want someone to do the work.

I recently pulled out from a job that I interviewed for and had a good chance at getting. They wanted to automate their transaction taxes as much as possible. One person was doing it manually as a full time job and they were retiring. They want the new person to automate it, which is possible, down to a week or so work each month. Where we disagreed was the other 3 weeks. They wanted the new role to just fill in on other tax work to take pressure off the rest of department my interest ended there as I would of had wanted to focus on advancing the function technologically. The department was run by a 30 yr employee who didn't see changing what was working

If you want honest feedback let me know and I can more into deal offline though.

Just venting. College friend (same ethnicity but came to US with family as a kid) told me she might get a new job offer w a smaller firm, 50% pay bump. We currently work at comparable big firms but her pay is already higher than mine (hers include stocks, mine doesn’t). We did equally well in college & I know I’m just as smart. Can’t help but feel like my career’d have been much better if I did not need sponsorship. Smaller firms don’t sponsor so I work at a big firm but pay isn’t great 🙄
