Most of these shooters are already known to the FBI. The gun discussion requires nuance because ownership is a protected right, you obviously don’t want crazy people or criminals to be able to easily/legally get them, but just being weird online isn’t grounds to take someone’s rights away, and the everyday law abiding citizen also shouldn’t have to
Compromise their rights due to some crazies.
The left and right politicians, per usual, are incapable of nuance in their discussions and ideas and just say absurd and usually factually incorrect things that are extreme to cause more divide/uproar, create a boogeyman, and drive funding/donations so they can continue to skim away and get rich off the taxpayers. It doesn’t really matter for them since they all get private security details.
With the size of the US, number of guns already out there that are able to be obtained by criminals (even illegally), and our overall lack of care for other people and lowering of standards of society to where we just let bad behavior slide and no longer have any sort of self accountability, I think we’re past the point of any helpful or meaningful legislation.
I don’t know if there is a good answer other than look out for and protect yourself and those your care about.

This is one of the best thought through and reasonable responses that I’ve read on this bowl.

I don’t know. I live in a high crime area. We still have drive by shootings. I built my house with ICF walls because they’re bullet proof.
I don’t think the criminals are going to listen to any legislation. I carry every day and try to be cool with everybody.
As for shootings at big events I try and be aware of anything that looks or feels out of place.
Yeah. Enact legislation like the rest of world has in order to minimize gun violence.
Yep, because Illinois’ already strict laws have prevented so much violence
MD1- What are you proposing? Illinois state troopers stand at the Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Kentucky and Missouri borders and inspect each car that enters for guns? There is freedom of movement between the states so obviously that's a non starter.
Are you proposing regular searches of people entering Illinois from other states?

That, too. But that’s very… patriot act ish.
Widespread surveillance like you describe is blatantly unconstitutional.
Friends, family, concerned neighbors have to report suspicious behavior to the police and go through the courts. Police can act on social media evidence, but cannot do the kind of no-cause widespread surveillance your suggestion requires
All of the recent mass shootings have made me sick. Highland park hit me harder as I grew up there. It should be difficult for people, especially these young troubled men, to buy automatic weapons. Would love to take action, but I think all politicians need to be replaced in order for something to happen, which is unrealistic.

You have to get comfortable with the fact that there are bad people in the world who want to do harm to others, and they WILL find a way to do it: running a car through a crowd of people in France, shooting up a mall in Denmark, stabbing people on the street in London, setting off a car bomb in Afghanistan.
Now, there's also a huge population of people who are acting out these atrocities who are average people who simply don't feel a sense of importance, they don't receive enough attention, perhaps they weren't loved. One thing we can do as everyday people is just be kinder to one another. Truly think about your biases and why you might treat someone a certain way (that person looks strange, or that person acts odd)... continuing to marginalize people will cause them to seek out attention... and we have a media that demonstrates just how famous "nobodies" can become overnight by doing something terrible.
Lastly, get some self-defense training. I personally choose to carry a concealed firearm when I'm out and about because my city is a dangerous place. That might not be the answer for you, there there are steps you can take to be better prepared, e.g. karate, physical conditioning, wearing non-flashy clothing. I also carry a fake wallet with fake money and expired credit cards /ID. If I get robbed at gunpoint, I know that my first option is to throw my decoy wallet and run. Escalation is the last resort.

There’s really nothing you can do. Just stay aware of your surroundings and protect those you know to extent your can. Country (and world) is going downhill and no one will stop it. This is humanity on the way to extinction and you best try to take advantage of your time before it all ends.
I don't think gun control is the answer. We should focus on mental health and social media algorithms.
The recipe is out there, there is no need to reinvent the wheel here. Simply copy step by step, with the massive challenges that that entails, what other western countries have. This could be safe housing for the homeless, appropriate care, less/no guns. Easy? No. Effective? Yes.
I know it’s culturally and politically complex but there is no other way out of this IMO.
I feel like the software is out there but it’s hard to act on it. Definitely took for improvement to identify potential attackers.
Legislation is a lot more difficult. Too many guns already in circulation and politicians really don’t care. The left uses them as publicity and the right has no intention of slowing gun sales

Ok your comment made it sound like you think democrats is the only party that proposed changes so I am not sure.

I was under the impression that the only thing that can be done is to arm everyone. More guns is the current solution.

Compared to what… 1776?
This is nothing more than a symptom of societal decay and lack of help for the crazies. No amount of gun control will stop this.
