“Comparison is the thief of joy.” Let me give you one piece of advice. If you compare yourself to other people, you will always be disappointed. If you accept a salary, your increases will be based on the salary you started at. If you join a company at a different time than someone else, you may experience different benefits than that person. I remember when I found out that someone made more money than me and I was wisely told to worry about what I have. It is the best advice I’ve ever gotten. I have managed people who made more than me, and I have learned that all that matters is that I feel fairly compensated. You will make more than many and less than some. But it is a race to futility and resentment if you let yourself get into that kind of headspace.
That's the best advice you've ever gotten????
Lots of reasons someone might get a bonus: won some awards, helped bring in some new business, turned down a different job offer, are running a big, profitable account, are very important to a very important client or… maybe they deserve a raise but the agency isn’t in a position to commit to the raise on next year’s payroll, so this year’s raise is given as a bonus instead.
Have you both been in the role for the same amount of time? That could be a factor. Also in some companies, group or team results can influence bonus distribution,.. I wouldn't assume your performance was less impressive or anything.
