I just found out that my coworker, who I share the same job title and workload with, had gotten a year-end bonus at the end of last year. Do raises always correspond to performance or are there other things that go into it? I feel like I've performed better than him, if anything, and this whole discovery is make feel a little floundered.

“Comparison is the thief of joy.” Let me give you one piece of advice. If you compare yourself to other people, you will always be disappointed. If you accept a salary, your increases will be based on the salary you started at. If you join a company at a different time than someone else, you may experience different benefits than that person. I remember when I found out that someone made more money than me and I was wisely told to worry about what I have. It is the best advice I’ve ever gotten. I have managed people who made more than me, and I have learned that all that matters is that I feel fairly compensated. You will make more than many and less than some. But it is a race to futility and resentment if you let yourself get into that kind of headspace.

That's the best advice you've ever gotten????

Lots of reasons someone might get a bonus: won some awards, helped bring in some new business, turned down a different job offer, are running a big, profitable account, are very important to a very important client or… maybe they deserve a raise but the agency isn’t in a position to commit to the raise on next year’s payroll, so this year’s raise is given as a bonus instead.

like

Have you both been in the role for the same amount of time? That could be a factor. Also in some companies, group or team results can influence bonus distribution,.. I wouldn't assume your performance was less impressive or anything.

Good evening all,
With my partner we are considering making a move to the countryside of Switzerland, with a gorgeous RE project offering incredible views on immaculate mountains and lake. However, it is far away, and will require 1h+ train/car commute vs. 10 min biking right now. We are scared it will bite us back at some point, although COVID helped w/ remote working being a new norm. The project will be done 2024, so I hope to have a more relax job by then. Any similar experience to share?

When non-ad ppl ask you what do you do? In terms of title; do you tell them “copywriter”? Or immediately assume they dont know and might confuse it with copyright infringement, and just end up telling them that you’re a writer or a creative director, and skip the hassle

I was hired to work on one account as the only writer. Told they’re handing me another account (or they may hire another writer). I need and want more responsibility and $$. How to negotiate??

Jumping off a related topic: am I delusional to not care about jr/int/sr level titles? I've been a "copywriter" since the day I started and steadily gained responsibility, autonomy, and money. Happy with career progression, always getting juicier assignments, work directly with ECDs/CCOs... am I missing something crucial? Is my case an anomaly? Or is it okay not to push for a title upgrade?

So, you’ve reached the stage of your career where you care more about cashing a fat paycheck than making “creative ads”. You’d rather have the resources and free time to fulfill your creative itch outside of work than try to sell the next big idea to an 28 year old marketing manager with an annual budget of 150k. How do you make the absolute most money as a copywriter while still working a 9-5? Asking for... a... friend?

I don't know if this is a recent change but I’m seeing postings for junior copywriter/community manager roles. Have these roles always been attached or posted at a junior level? RANT: People re-writing a cw’s stuff has always been painful. These days it’s far more common than when I started. It’d be one thing if they upgraded the work. If I learned from it. If I genuinely seethed with envy over their wit w/that perfectly placed semi-colon. People can’t re-art direct stuff bc they don’t know the programs so they ask the ADs for changes. Word and a keyboard made everyone think they can write. Which they can’t. Google Slides is Google slip ‘n slide into (bad ref. here.)
