I deny medical through my employer every year. However, I do opt for the dental and eye coverage as it's pretty cheap for me and leaves me with zero out of pocket.
Are use the Tricare vision every other year for my eye examination and use the companies VSP coverage on those off years to cover the vision coverage. I get dental every year through my employer because I’m covered with Tricare medically.
A lot of people don’t like dealing with Tricare so they choose to go with the employer plan but it sounds like you’ve already decided.
The other benefit of keeping the employer plan is to have additional secondary coverage. Your employer insurance would be primary and TRS secondary which means they’d pay things your employer doesn’t cover which will reduce your out of pocket on copays and deductibles.
TRS is pretty comprehensive so unless your employer insurance is very cheap or more generous than TRS there’s not much benefit in keeping the employer plan.
