It happens to everyone (including me a few months ago after a very long tenure) and you will be ok. I’ve taken time off so I haven’t been fully immersed in the job search but first I’d say take a couple days for yourself to process. Hopefully you got a severance. You should also sign up for unemployment via your state’s .gov website. Hopefully your former employers have guided you a bit on that. Just confirm with them that your are eligible for unemployment benefits. In NY you get a max of 26 weeks within the period of a year. Important to understand your health benefits and Cobra. You can keep your current benefits through Cobra for 18 months I believe, but you will have to pay for it every month if you elect to do so and it is pretty expensive (because healthcare in America). I chose to do so because I have a lot of prescriptions and out of network doctors. You do have some time to make that decision but if you decide to do it in a few months, you have to pay the previous months retroactively from my understanding. Make sure to read all documents given to you carefully and ask questions. Reach out to your close most supportive friends in your immediate circle so you don’t feel alone. Once the dust settles and assuming you want to find another job, work on your resume and start reaching out to your network and do a lot of LinkedIn research. I would also take the opportunity to learn new things (for example I signed up for a course on AI on coursera). Also if you have any hobbies, do those more. And finally, keep an open mind on any and all opportunities that come your way, even random freelance gigs. You never know who you will meet or what new skills you will learn. It’s scary for sure but it can be an exciting time.
Yea I live in NYC so time is surely of the essence to find a new gig but hopefully it’ll work out. I really appreciate this advice. It wasn’t a mass layoff at my company so I feel really isolated in this situation
Been there more than twice. I’m so sorry. It gets better with time, please know it’s about numbers on a spreadsheet. And says nothing about your worth as a person or employee. And it will get better!

If you can, take a moment to think about the direction you want to take in your career. I’ve been on your situation and because of desperation ended up in a terrible company. Use your instincts and avoid any place that doesn’t seem right.
Let go or fired for cause?
The business needs went a different direction where I was no longer needed so let go I guess.
Happens to everyone. Sucks right now, but it will pass and you will be okay. Promise. 🙏🏻
