Get a SANS GIAC cert, they’re the true standards
It’s the gold standard for cyber security certs
Having a CISSP doesn’t make you good at appsec or be a pentester. While a very good cert, you’re looking to break into a specialty with a more generalist cert.
Whoever told you Cissp doesn’t matter is wrong. It’s not a technical cert but it establishes that you have a baseline understanding of several domains. You should get another cert or two in a specialty eventually though
Deloitte will pay you 3k for certification if your in cyber risk advisory. Additionally you need it or any other security cert to get promoted to manager. Again cyber risk advisory. Outside of it it's useless, as well your prolly in the wrong business line.
No
That’s what I though. I’ve passed the exam but I’m a Associate of ISC2. I was looking to get into app security and was told it’s not really valued at all. I probably should get an app security cert as well. Just curious of how to get my foot in.
Not valued in the context of application security or cyber security in general?
Security in general. At least what I was told before I even mentioned app security
@PWC2, true. I’ll look into getting an app security cert as well.
CISSP matters to everyone else. Big 4 ain’t gonna pay you more for having it but with other HR it will either get you the interview or get you a good $15-20k more on the offer, if not both.
I think it helps everywhere. If you’re security focused I think it’s slowly becoming a must. If you’re in other areas (Cloud Infrastructure, DevOps, etc) it will definitely help. Security is something that everyone just needs to know about in tech
I almost expect people to have it if you’re in the cyber industry. It’s like a cover letter (maybe less so nowadays) on your resume or the thank you message after an interview. Never really bat an eye when I see it, but when it’s missing I’m wondering where the certification is. Also recognize that skills related to more technical certs bring different value depending on the role. CISSP is a generalist, I wouldn’t believe someone is good at AP testing or red teaming with it. For that I might look to OSCP.
The Cissp is about as valuable a high school degree in the grand scheme of things Outside of govt no employer will turn down a person w years of security experience because they don't have a cissp.
I also second pwc1s advice....giac / sans for the win
