I actually found my last two jobs through LinkedIn, with the last being in 2022. As I start a new job search I plan on using it as well. However, I will say it has become much less of a tool as it seems to have a lot of spam accounts and messages on it now.
I actually found the same thing. All linked members are democrats and they are political. They will ban you when you are outright republican. Another issue, you cannot post against your previous employer, even though it's true. It is a scam. They want you to be a member and pay your dues. They post political against Trump and republican but they won't post anything against democrats. Its not political for as long as you are a democrat fanatic.

I used to be very passive like you on LinkedIn. But seeing how crappy the market is, I figured it’s better to be proactive instead of waiting for a fire to install smoke detectors.
So I do regularly schedule LinkedIn posts 2x/wk and did a major profile rebrand which led me to increase my connections by 20% and got solicited for job opportunities that offer premium rates. In other words instead of I have to chase opportunities, opportunities chase me. Huge game changer.
Now I can also describe the issue from someone’s 2nd or 3rd degree connection point of view. Too often I get random solicitation from job seekers wanting an internal reference to a job posting. I don’t know these people. I don’t know their quality of work. I don’t know if they have abrasive personalities. Why the hell would I risk my professional reputation for you? Amazingly these are how many people treat networking. Like that friend who only reaches out to you to borrow money. How likely are you to help?
Now on the other hand if someone built a good online reputation and demonstrates professional work and thought process I’d recommend that stranger gladly.
EDIT: Networking and posting on LinkedIn isn't just about visibility—it's about "warming up" the algorithms. When you're active, you're more likely to surface in Recruiter-side searches and Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).
Keep in mind that many recruiters manage the "hidden job market"—roles that are filled through headhunting and referrals without ever being posted on public job boards.

@cyber security1 It’s actually pretty hilarious that a platform like LinkedIn provides an advantage to us type B personalities. We don’t need to attend in-person networking events or do public speaking. You can sit in the comfort of your own home and do everything electronically and people still complain - it’s too hard.
As a Structural Engineer, have you considered the Army Corps of Engineers for a place of employment and career?
I recently got a job through linked in. I set my profile to open to work- but the option that o my recruiters can see. I was contacted by recruiters right away. Had a few interviews that way, and applied to jobs that were posted directly by companies as well. I think you can’t just hit easy apply- if they asked for a cover letter or you had to email someone I used chat gpt to write a short message and that for me more interviews.
LinkedIn nowadays is a farcry from its heyday. Current LinkedIn is a cesspool of scammers, bots, ads, and people showing off every "learning opportunity" they pull out of their hat in a scrambling attempt to be relevant or viral (ex: "Today I missed the bus. This is what it taught me about B2B sales..."). The fact that younger people make more memes about it than actually use it is telling, along with the fact that LinkedIn never posts actual statistics about ACTIVE site users during their metric announcements.
Despite all of this, I do think they are unfortunately the largest job hub right now. Though, I've heard some people had success on Monster in the past couple months. I haven't tried them myself yet, so I can't guarantee results.
I’ve gotten a lot of interviews through LinkedIn but they came from having a relationship with recruiters from recruiting agencies. I’ve never actually posted anything.
Today alone I received (2) sets of messages. First one I had received messages back & forth between 7am-noon, At noon I had a 30 minute interview spill over an hour long. By 5pm I had an initial offer letter of 175k + 70k in bonus + 8 weeks PTO (non accruing). An hour ago I received another message from another difference recruiter starting at 180k + stock for the bonus structure (unknown value) . People also judge you based on who you know. If you associate with the people of a certain level of elevation they treat the offers and negotiations as if you are at or above their level. Guilt by association in the right way.
I like that process, thank you for clarifying. definitely agree with brand recognition. I had a great profile years ago and now i’m starting from scratch :(

LinkedIn is a Circlejerk of self patting
Here is how it is useful. When you see a job posting, find out who in your network works at the company. Ask them for details about the job. See what the company values. For my last company, it was Customer Service. Then tailor your resume to reflect those values. Second, see if they can put in a good word with the hiring manager. It will not get you a job, but may likely get you an interview.
I used to get contacted every week by recruites from LinkedIn until I changed my profile to retired. Be sure your profile reflects you are looking for work. Make sure the profile has your skills and accomplishments.
I recently accepted a job I found on LinkedIn. Prior to that I never had any luck with anything related to Linkedin and coincidentially I signed up for the "free" month of LinkedIn Premium right before I found the job I'm about to start. So it may be the case of profile + paid membership, which I typically avoid.
As a software engineer, I find LinkedIn incredibly valuable. Recruiters find me! Just make sure you have your “open to work” status on with your desired job titles, etc. If the need is even more urgent, but the “open to work” banner on your profile pic.
Oh, BTW…. Have a nice (if not even professional) picture of yourself as your profile pic. It makes a big difference!

It’s okay. For me it is basically useless and always has been. It’s more of a social media sort of thing. To praise oneself of awards, promotion, and to get all the other people to jump in the boat with you. You go through it and they want you to click on people you know or knew and to let them know all your current personal business. It runs a close race, in my opinion and my opinion alone, with the controversial fb social media.
The only reason recruiters want your LI is to access your network of colleagues so they can make money for their agencies. I always ask recruiters if having a LI profile is a requirement for a job and if the answer is in the affirmative, I would walk away. Jobs come and go but trusted friends and colleagues are hard to find.
Linkedin has become the new instagram. People just want to increase their followers. I have been trying to network with people to get referrals. They will accept your connection request but when you message them they don’t have the courtesy to respond. It shows how shallow people have become in 2026 when it comes to just referring which ultimately would benefit them to earn some perks.
I mean in the first place if they haven’t met me they should not even accept my connection request. If you are unknown and still want to increase ur friends or followers to show up more numbers for visibility and not willing to help others or atleast have the courtesy of responding back even if it’s a no. What do you think linkdein is for? To make connections and ultimately get business, increase subscribers or get referrals. I guess that’s the reason why most people want to use linkdein. It shows lack or willingness to help others or see them succeed along the way.
Linkedin is a sleezy company
I agree I haven’t found a job on there either
I think the way to use LinkedIn properly is just like Bumble or Match--get to a real life meeting ASAP. Ideally: know what you want with clarity, have a network already with some breadth and depth, reach out to any 'good' contact at the target companies to get a meeting, go have an in-person discussion, be interesting and engaging and kind, let them know that you're exploring opportunities in their company, would like to work there you think, and are doing research etc. I think it is a fantasy that I will find my next job via online-only work (just like my next girlfriend will not result in swiping alone) but it is a realistic to believe that online networks and contacts can assist me in my search but I must be strategic and realistic and work a real marketing plan wherein some warm contacts begin online but job offers will not be the result of crushing Linkedin.
