Consulting Exit Opportunities

I know I should care about prestige but I’m at FAANG and it’s been 5 months amd idon’t love my job (sales). I’m super junior and joining remotely feels isolating. But my manager is nice & approved grad school for me (starting PT online masters in data analytics next year) and perks are awesome. My end goal is product A startup I talked too couple months ago offered me a PM position. It pays 15k less and perks aren’t as good but relatively decent (100% healthcare, some 401k). Do I jump?

Don’t jump, keep FAANG and finish the degree. You will get better product roles after 2 years.

Why would you throw away the grad school opportunity? If the team is good, stick with it and recognize that covid and remote work is likely adding significantly to your feeling of not enjoying the job. At least personally, the social element of work was what made me love my job more than the job itself so I wouldn’t jump too quickly until you’ve given it a chance post-covid.

Why can’t you shift into PM in your FAANG? I wish I could have gotten grad school for free. Also it is HARD HARD HAAAARD to find a good manager. Your manager obviously cares about your growth to approve grad school so quickly after you started. Will you have the same managerial support/growth opportunities at this start up?

Ah I missed the sales part. Yeah....just too bad though. You gotta go where you’ll get the experience, just too bad to miss out on such good managerial experience.

Arrow Icon

If it’s what you want yes

Product experience is what gets you product manager opportunities. I’d finish grad school and leave to another role then. You’ll have the degree and also the FAANG title then.

1. How’s the brand strength for the startup? 2. Won’t you lose a ton of RSUs leaving before a year is finished?

Arrow Icon

If you don't like your job because working remote is isolating, and you are junior, then would going to a startup help? Startups are also impacted by covid and WFH, so you will be just as isolated. You probably won't go from a junior sales hire to executive at a startup (unless you're a founder), so you will still be junior. Sounds like you should stay for a year or two, handle or change the isolation and junior-ness the best you can and then reevealuate.

I think you answered you’re own question 😉

Personally, I take the job at the startup. I’ve never been one to prioritize prestige of company over your actual role

Stay, finish school. PM right out of MBA with FAANG will have many more doors open and much better salary power.

Trump is a narcissistic philistine, and he bent American culture toward him.” I think about this all the time as I spend hours in this bowl.

I have a 2 hour interview with an agency tomorrow for a freelance role. This is my first time speaking with them, a recruiter set me up with them last week and they liked me enough to want to meet me (!!) I’m meeting the members of the team individually which is why it’s so long, but do you think a 2 hour interview right off the bat is a good sign? Any tips for not burning out over the course of 2 hours?
