Starting a new job at Applied Materials on Monday as a Manufacturing Engineer III. I’ve been out of college for 5 years and all of my work experience till now has been in R&D for start ups and small businesses . So not only is this a new experience for me going into such a large company but also a industry (semiconductors). Does anybody has tips or advices on what I should expect as a new hire and how I can set myself up for success? Thanks!

I have an MBA and it’s come in handy as I moved into a managerial role. I don’t think anyone else actually cares that I have it other than it’s kind of funny for a creative to have an MBA.
Pretty much useful if you’re planning to go in-house or consulting later on in your career

I have a friend who got her MBA while working. I know she worked hard for it but her insta sure was filled with way more team parties, events, fun exercises, etc., than I would expect. Also, their school has a jump start relationship with all kinds of employers, so they all got guaranteed interviews and handoffs directly into leadership. Right out of school she got a job at T-Mobile, which kind of bums me out, because as much as that degree was earned, I *know* her and she doesn’t have near senior level knowledge about real world marketing but hey, she bought a degree so I guess she’s in.

MBA definitely helps. But I think and MBA helps all careers. Helps you play the role of critical thinker and business partner to your client. Think beyond advertising. Additionally provides new networking opportunities and connections (I have clients who got their MBA at my University and we chit chat about it and attend MBA alum events together). Finally it got me a salary increase.

Degrees matter less and less. But advanced degrees do seem to matter at higher levels of leadership.
