I recently applied to the Content Designer, 2023 Graduate remote role at Atlassian and I'd appreciate it if I could get a referral.
Here are some details to aid in your decision-making:
- Last summer, I worked at Google as a UX Content Design Intern.
- I am currently in a grad program at
NYU and will graduate in Spring 2023.
- Before graduate school, I spent 3+ years as a Copywriter in Advertising.
I'd really appreciate any recommendation I can get at this time.

Network with junior folks - they are usually the ones making the decisions on the interview list and can “pound the table” for those they feel have made positive impressions. If you aren’t getting an interview via that route after having spoken to a number of people, you may be giving off the wrong impression or your stats (GPA and quant experience usually) may not be strong enough.
You do not need a referral from someone senior; if you have one, it can definitely help but I’d say we only get a handful of partner referrals each cycle (out of 80+ interview offers).
We’ve moved away from Partner referrals guaranteeing interviews, and our junior folks no longer screen resumes or make interview decisions. We’re trying to make the process less biased and more fact based (eg resume + your online problem solving test).
Was very surprised to see this, cuz isnt Wharton a top target school for mbb?
Nonetheless I just used LinkedIn to sort through my school alumni and shoot them an email for an informational interview. I aimed to reach out to only 3-4 folks per firm at various levels of seniority and made sure I had a legit reason to network with them other than hoping for referrals.
My response success rate was ~70% and some of the ppl I networked with offered to help me prep throughout the process.
To echo what others said, looking back, I don’t remember a single person said they would refer me so perhaps networking isn’t that big of a deal? Maybe just focus more on the raw stats. Good luck!!
What’s your background?
Went to penn and ran into the same issue. It’s honestly all a numbers game about GPA, major, and past experience. Networking as an undergrad can be hit or miss, unless you connect with someone higher up in the process they have little impact.
Networking has no impact if you are an undergrad at a core school, for McK.
Appreciate the advice. Background is that I’m graduating from Wharton (undergrad).
I don’t personally know anyone senior at these companies— is there another way to boost my chances of getting the interview if this is not an option and cold messaging/networking with alumni has little impact?
For us: we don’t read Cover Letters, SAT has no impact.
