I would suggest giving Mad Men one more try. The first time I watched I thought it was kinda slow and also gave up after a couple episodes. Then a couple years later I went back because of all the hype - turned out it became my favorite show ever and now I’ve watched the whole thing about 3x all the way through haha.
Thanks.
Mad Men is spectacular and I don’t think it matters if you work in advertising or not. That said it’s a slow burn. It’s not so much about each episode being amazing but about the character development and about the small twists and turns over time.
Happyish is why my wife and I bought a house in Woodstock in 2018. The pandemic made living here full time possible.
Haha. Kudos to you and your wife for making it happen.
It wasn’t the slowness that bothered me. It felt too transcribed and inauthentic. As if Weiner interviewed a couple of advertising people for 30 min and then pitched the show.
Here’s what Don says…
It’s a show with no special effects, explosions, murders or magic. It’s not for everyone.
I watched one episode and the sexism shown on the show gave me ptsd and made me mad. I don’t think I finished it and never went back. Don’t need to be reminded how hard it is to be a women in advertising.
Lol well maybe I’ll give it another chance then 🫣
You gotta get through the first season. It’s slooowww. I enjoy it, but also agree it’s a tad overrated.
Haven't seen a single episode
Mad Men is a great show, but Happyish was so freakishly accurate to what agency life is really like.
IMO, it nailed the "Swedish creative" vibe. Just my experience, but every Swede I've ever worked with has been like...those guys.
"It" being Happyish, not Mad Men.
I felt the same way. But, I forced myself to watch because everyone else was watching it and I wanted to be able to join the conversations. It got better after a while.
I watched the first few seasons of Mad Men before I worked in advertising and it was just okay. I watched it again after working in advertising and found it to be much more enjoyable. Mostly bc the different department tropes were so much more apparent. Like ofc Pete Campbell is accounts…lol
Ive never even watched mad men. I liked a clip I saw of a kodak pitch from the show though. I dont want to watch a show about work.
Tapped out after the first 3 seasons. Writing is good but I lost interest in the characters.
The second and third wives get hotter. Keep watching!!!
