Amy,
I’m 60 recently divorced; was forced to close my business and just moved cross country. I’ve been looking for nearly 2 years and just now received my first interview. You might want to take it until something else comes up for you. Finding work at our age is much harder.
I'm from Africa, Nigeria, I'm 40 yrs old, an experience delivery logistics driver with Nigerian class G driver's license and also hold a Nigerian international passport with ten years validity, also have a degree in sociology... Seeking for an employment outside Nigeria with visa sponsorship. I need an employer to take me abroad and work in return to settle the expenses. Thank you.
I would take the job until something else comes better
I agree. I am also 57 and had a similar background, except I quit due to menopause issues. I've been looking for 3 years now. Tried many things just to get some money.. finding that most other jobs don't think strategically and think you're "wacked" for asking questions. It's been horrible. I was making 60k and can barely get $11 - 20 per hour. I have ended up helping my husband with his remodeling company and doing gig work. My 99 year old grand father helped me out. I never saw this coming in the work force. It's horrible!!!!!
I am interested
I was in the same situation as you. For the last two years, I tried to get a job at the same level, but I think I made a mistake. I accepted work that is ten times below my previous level. Still, now that I don’t have the stress of paying my bills, I’m in a better position to create great things. I’m 47.
Yes you should accept it, Never say no to any job or source of livelihood that comes your way, because you never know where it might lead you soon.
I hear you — this is a tough spot, and it makes sense you’re weighing both the financial and emotional sides. Let’s break it down:
1. The Money Side
$18/hour full time is around $37k/year before taxes. That’s a big drop if you were previously at the top of your field. The key question is: can you cover your basic living expenses (housing, utilities, food, insurance, transportation) at that pay?
If you’ll constantly be stressed about bills, it could wear you down even if the job itself is stress-free.
But if you can squeak by, it might buy you breathing room while you plan your next move.
2. The Mental/Health Side
After 18 years in a stressful role, a job with low duties and no stress could give you a chance to recover mentally and physically.
It could help you avoid burnout, depression, or feeling “stuck at home” while you’re still job-hunting.
3. The Strategic Side
Taking the job doesn’t mean you’re stuck there forever. It could be a bridge job — stable income, low stress, while you quietly look for something better.
If it’s a decent company, you might move up internally or leverage the stability to pursue certifications, networking, or part-time consulting on the side.
Staying unemployed too long sometimes makes it harder to re-enter the workforce, so even a lower-paying role can keep your resume “active.”
👉 Bottom line:
If $18/hr covers your essentials (even if tight), it could be smart to take it — for peace of mind, stability, and to keep yourself in the workforce. Then treat it as a stepping stone, not a final destination. If it truly won’t cover basics, you may need to hold out, supplement with side income, or look into part-time/freelance work to bridge the gap.
I would take the job until something else comes better
It's easier to find a job when you have one. Well, its easier to find a good/better job when you already have one. When you don't have the stress of paying for the basic necessities your ability to interview and negotiate is much better.
Anyone interested in working from home?
Experience is beautiful but not very necessary, you work at your own pacing for 900$ bi-weekly

I worked in my last position for 23 years and was 7 years from retiring, but I had to get out of California and couldn't wait for 7 more years. I retired early and we moved to another state and spent the first year settling in and getting other family members moved. I went back to work, but was making $12/hr less than I was used to, and the job was stressful. I ended up getting laid off and after several months went to work for another company for even less. However, the work is so much less stressful and the bills are still getting paid. Sometimes, change is good and we realize we don't always need what we're accustomed to in order to be happy. At this point, it's quality of life over all else. I'm going to be 59 this month. I have learned that the more I try to control my life, the worse things work out. God had a plan for me before I was even brought into this world, so I leave it all in His hands and trust the plan. He'll put you where he wants you, where you need to be.
Amen
We recently ended leases of tenants who failed to follow property rules. The property has since been renovated and is now vacant. Your main duty will be to post it on specific websites I provide. Once applications are received, you’ll also prepare the property for new renters by ensuring it is fully cleaned and ready. Compensation offered is $900 for your service. While payment is not my main concern, I expect the work to be done to a high standard. Message me directly if interested.
take it until something better come along also work parttime to match the salary you like make sure they're both stressfree that if you want to work two jobs
Please read the book " Don't say yes when you want to say no" by Dr. Herbet Fensterheim. you will get the answer from his wife - a psychologist who transitioned from the same situation you undergo and how her husband - the author helped her. Change is a part of life. Losing job where you spent life is not a guaranteed source of income as organizations need change. You need to think differently, take some risk to apply your skills in different areas and shine out like anything and forget about the long term job you thought was the best source of income. you may get tenfold more income. Just read the pre-fsce of the book, where Jean Myer- her wife - a psychologist loses her job after 18 years and how she transforms after her husband explains what she could do.
The job market is really bad right now. Age discrimination is a real thing and so older people have a harder time finding work these days. I read an article recently about removing dates from your resume because of age discrimination. Dates like graduation year or anything that would indicate your age should be removed from your resume if you are older. It would probably be a good idea to take that job especially if they can give you the $18 and then you will have some income while you can continue looking for another job that is more suitable for you. It is not uncommon in this job market to be out of work for over a year, so when a job offer arises it would be best to take it.
That's good
Im looking for account receivables role
Did the prior company give you a good severance package for every year worked, if so then I would take it & keep applying for other positions not locally & maybe an hour commute that is worth the pay & drive; otherwise work to eat & look at ways to eliminate unnecessary waste or bills. I went from mak8ng 60,000 to 30,000 & contacted American Consumer Credit Counseling to get all credit cards down to 0% with a 5 year payment plan. Only spend as if you are living on social security, despite how much you earn and that is why I am able to survive.
