Amy,
I’m 60 recently divorced; was forced to close my business and just moved cross country. I’ve been looking for nearly 2 years and just now received my first interview. You might want to take it until something else comes up for you. Finding work at our age is much harder.
I'm from Africa, Nigeria, I'm 40 yrs old, an experience delivery logistics driver with Nigerian class G driver's license and also hold a Nigerian international passport with ten years validity, also have a degree in sociology... Seeking for an employment outside Nigeria with visa sponsorship. I need an employer to take me abroad and work in return to settle the expenses. Thank you.
I would take the job until something else comes better
I agree. I am also 57 and had a similar background, except I quit due to menopause issues. I've been looking for 3 years now. Tried many things just to get some money.. finding that most other jobs don't think strategically and think you're "wacked" for asking questions. It's been horrible. I was making 60k and can barely get $11 - 20 per hour. I have ended up helping my husband with his remodeling company and doing gig work. My 99 year old grand father helped me out. I never saw this coming in the work force. It's horrible!!!!!
I was laid off after top pay as well. Remote job - paid very well - laid off for over 9 months actively searching. I will say for that scale of pay - I wouldn't take it. It will take time away from you being able to apply and interview. Make sure you 1. have your resume redone so AI will let it go through (use ChatGPT to write it for you). Make sure you then paste that into LinkedIn. Look on Indeed / LinkedIn and have them email you the latest in your area. Also - look for a recruiter. This has served me well and I was recruited to my new job - be patient. If they were a higher pay I would say do it but that is too low.
As a son, who watched his incredibly talented mother step down in her career after getting a knock like this I have some advice.
If you are a subject matter expert in anything, I would seriously consider finding a CV writer and Interview coach. Because you have so much experience, in all likelihood will beat 80-90% of your competition and are probably just not coming across well enough at the first point of contact.
We hire recently retired SMEs for day rates of €850 to €1500. They’re not all amazing superstars they’ve just positioned themselves like one and you can too.
There will be gaps that people may be concerned about like your technical know how, if you are struggling with any aspect like Microsoft teams, excel, word, outlook just do courses in them they’ll bring you up to speed for free in a short space of time. Do this before you start any job.
If you need the money take the job but set yourself a 6 month target to leave with small goals like having 4 coaching calls a month, sending out your CV x amount of times a week. I wish you the best of luck and keep your head up!
I would take the job. Best some income than none. Hopefully you can move up or find a better job in the meantime.
👍👍
Take it. When the universe is trying to help you out, don't spit in its face. Try being 67 with the same problem.
I'm also in my 50's and worked 2 part time jobs at minimum wage until I found something in my field after 5 yrs. I know it's insulting but ageism is real, it paid the bills and kept me busy.
Would you be open to travel nursing assignments? That may garner a higher rate of pay, and you can ask for travel assignments in the area where you live.
Coach
THANKS!!! I GOT A JOB TODAY!!! 🙏 I start tomorrow. Great vibes from go!! Great atmosphere. Most are my age, same work ethics!!! I'm so excited!!! Thank you God!
I am in the same boa! I just moved to Florida and was making 40 an hour and had been there 18 years. I come here and the want to pay me 16 an hour?? I think I made that back in high school. I don’t know what to do. I have been applying for months. Even remote jobs. Good luck!
Take it until you can find something else unless your unemployment is more than that.
Well, my advice would be to, stay Financially Productive 1st, & foremost. A little bit of something, something!! Is better than nothing, nothing!!
If you can afford it, it might be worth it for the stress free part. You can also try looking for remote positions. I know that I see posts on Linkedin regularly that list remote position websites.
I thought minimum wage is 23 Plus per hour
Basically Australia is stuffed ,
I would accept anything at the moment, Then continue to search for better jobs while working at this one. I have been looking for over 2 years for a job since I lost mine. I worked for 15 years at my dream job. One merger later my position was phased out. I got a good severance package but I would have taken a pay cut to stay there.
I lost my job in Dec 2022 and couldn't find anything so I had to retire at 66 1/2. I ended up taking a job as a Home Health RN just to help the company grow. Best decision I ever made! The pay is lousy (200 - 3500/ year) because the company is small, but I choose my own hours and don't have to do the patient care that was killing my back and feet. I have just been promoted to Agency Director which gives me about 1200 more a year. I love it so much that it's more of a hobby than working. If this position will be something you love and less time/stress than you had, I'd adjust your expenses and take it.
I hear you, and I really get where you’re coming from. I was in IT project management for years, and after a layoff I felt the same way, overqualified, underpaid offers, and no real options that matched my experience. I ended up taking a lower-stress role just to keep things steady, but what really gave me hope was starting something on the side. I got into affiliate marketing, basically selling products I didn’t even create, for profit and I have also been able to create digital products like online courses, teaching others what I've learned over the years. It turned into a whole new income stream. That little step helped me stop feeling stuck and gave me room to breathe. You might find that taking the $18 job for stability while building something new on the side could give you both peace of mind and a way forward.
Hi Amy,
May I ask what your experience and job title was previously? Depending on the new position's requirements and qualifications are, and depending on what you were previously making, it may be worth a shot to go to your potential employer and simply have a discussion. Ask if there is a sign-on bonus, and if you will be eligible for incentive performance bonuses. For instance, and percentage of your base pay at the end of the year based on how the company performs and your performance. Or based on what you were previously making and your experience, make a case fir yourself and the value you bring and see if they will consider giving you a little more. And if not now, see if they will evaluate you in 90 days and if your performance exceeds their expectations, see what potential for an increase they will give you. Don't sell yourself short but keep in mind that it is always easier to find a job when you have a job. In my opinion, you should go to the hiring manager and explain you are excited about the opportunity, and you would like to accept but you have some questions with regard to the pay, bonuses, and performance reviews and go from there. That way they know you would like to accept their offer but want to see if there is room for negotiation and at a minimum know more about their pay structure and increases. Good luck.
I need a job. It's essential for my family to support carrying on my children' study cost.
absolutely, less stress at any age is a great benefit. Use the time to get what ever training benefits they offer and PDF your progress so you can show it to your next employer. Be great and indispensible but keep looking. As an employee keep looking at their site and applying for other positions that look fun with better pay, if they talk to you about it:tell them you have multi-discipline life experience but with that comes life expenses.
It is tough being put out into the job market at an older age. I am going through the same thing. Laid off at 63 in AR. Be patient. I would definitely ask for $18. It can't hurt.
It's a huge mess "In the Wild."
That's one of the main reasons I'm moving back to my home country, Belgium (I'm at Polend ATM). Be strong/be prepared. A whole lotta SHT is on it's way :/
