I once made a lateral move into a category I knew nothing about for better comp, and the first six months were humbling in ways I didn’t expect even though I’d been successful for years in my old industry. For anyone who has crossed into a new vertical, how long did it realistically take before you felt like you had your footing again?

Took my 90 days in a new industry to sell over 2 million in revenue but the new company lost 1.8 million of it. Most frustrating thing I’ve ever faced.

like

did the fundamentals transfer the way you thought they would, or did you basically relearn the job from scratch?

Depends what you mean by footing. Commission or understanding the new space? The only time a made a lateral it took me 60 days to have a firm understanding of the space and 120days/4 full months to regain my financial footing ( commission realized in 5 months) At my 1 yr mark my total comp was 3x more I made with my previous organization.

For me, confidence usually comes after six to twelve months. Learning a new industry takes longer than most people expect, even if you are already good at selling.

Hi, I would love to know more about your experience. How is it humbling? I'm in the same boat right now. I started 3 months ago.... and I'm still not sure about my footing. I was handling data, spreadsheets, analysis. Now, I'm doing negotiations and communications which I don't have any training whatsoever.

I would love to hear more from your experience, maybe I can learn some few techniques. The adjustments are quite challenging.

Additional Posts in Sales

Hello, I recently was reached out to by an in-house recruiter at a similar but slightly different company than the one I currently work for. The recruiter provided a base range and an OTE range. The lower end of that range is what I am currently making. The higher end of that range is almost 200k more than my current comp. The role is almost identical. I wasn’t looking to move, but that higher end range would set my family up very nicely for our goals. But I am happy at my current company. Help?

Anyone have experience working in sales for a startup? What are things to consider? Got a recruiter contacting me about an open position very similar to what I do now, at a startup.

Lately, I've been hearing a lot from my peers about how sales isn't a real profession.
I work at a tech startup and it mostly comprises developers. They can't stop emphasizing their importance in the food chain and I can't figure if I'm too humble or they're too arrogant.
This yapping comes from people I've known since college. I have successfully blocked all such negativity but wanted to know if anyone here has faced such scenarios.
P.S: I've already accepted an offer above my expectations

Seeking advice: I am a young sales consultant and sales engineer working for a tech startup company. I have 6 years of sales experience. And I have been helping run my family business for the past 10 years. I was intially interviewed for a senior account executive position at a $70k offer. Instead they told me I needed more training and hired me as a Junior account executive at a $50k salary + commission. Today is my 6th month mark and I have done very well. And no talks of a promotion / raise..

Curious what the base and commission structure is for inside sales and associate director of sales in biotech (also anyone else who wants to share pls put industry). Paid hourly or salary? At the biotech company I work at avg inside sales is $62,632 with a $3500 per quarter cap. Commission structure is % based on sales quota reached vs capped (not a direct % of sales). I’m underpaid at $53000 with $3500 cap per quarter.

It’s a 4 year degree and under this I have my High School equivalent with the years I attended there. The education wasn’t mentioned in the interviews. Continued below.

AWS vs Cloudflare BDR roles

AWS lowballed but I negotiated to match Cloudflare. Cloudflare offers more equity but AWS has a higher base.

I love Cloudflare. The people are great but it’s an engineering culture and the sales team isn’t as well shaped up and I can’t go for a promotion until at least 18 months of tenure. I am an investor in the company and think of them super highly. I’ve already got half a years SDR experience and AWS promotes quicker.

AWS has prestige but is it worth it?
