This person must really not care about their professional reputation. I wouldn't want to be known as a lawyer who screwed someone out of a fee. In our business, that's a good way to see your referrals dry up quick. While we all know we're supposed to do everything in writing, in practice, most firms rely - at least to some extent - on their referrers being honest. I'd never refer a case to someone I heard had screwed somebody else out of fees. If they'll do it to that person, they'll do it to you.

Did you bring in the cases after you were admitted? Also- was any of this memorialized in writing? Specifically, on the initial retainer statements filed with the state (at least in my state, NY), were you listed as the referring attorney?
I brought in a case to a firm pre-admission, in New York. The partner checked the OCA and ethics rules and said I was entitled to the referral fee because at the time of the fee I was an admitted attorney, it didn’t matter that I wasn’t an an admitted attorney when I brought the cases in.
