My problem with small talk these days is so much of it seems to boil down to so what have you been watching? As someone who doesn't really watch TV or keep up with podcasts and streams it makes it hard to have a conversation with a lot of people. Then there are people out there who just babble and don’t know how to elegantly enter and exit a conversation. Very distracting, they talk a lot and say nothing.
I also am not a big podcast person! Glad I’m not alone.
I think it depends on the person. I also don't love the mindless small talk about shows I haven't seen and lying that I'll add them to my list (there is no list) so I try to learn about the specific person's life and then ask specific questions (ex. "how's your pet/kid/favorite sports team"). The more personal and relationship-driven the convo/day, the more meaningful it is and the easier it is to find community and purpose in the workplace. But as AM1 said, good to chat a few mins then wrap it up to be respectful of everyone's time.
I like that tactic! I’m one of the few that doesn’t hand Netflix and I am a bit tired or someone recommending a show on Netflix and having to play it off like I’ll watch it when I literally can’t.
