I saw a colleague openly disagree with an editor in a meeting. They were firm but respectful, and everyone actually listened. It made me realise I usually just nod along. Do you challenge decisions at work, or keep quiet to stay safe?

I definitely challenge decisions. I cannot stand mediocrity and I refuse to settle for less than the best. Challenging the status quo is how you make things better.

I get that. I’ve been guilty of staying quiet to avoid conflict, but when I have spoken up, it’s usually made things better. The trick for me has been framing it as improvement rather than opposition

I tend to pick my battles. If it’s something small, I’ll let it go. But if it impacts the quality of the work or my team, I’ll speak up. Respectful pushback usually earns more trust than silence.

Depends if I feel it will be of any use. No point poking your head up if you know they don't care and will just get a bad mark against your name. I learn who do and don't accept challenges.

It definitely depends on the subject and how I feel about it but there have been times that I’ve regretted not challenging something before

Journalism is the best job in the world but I feel like people are less likely to take my work seriously because I am female. So it's like they automatically think the only things I would be good at writing about are fluffy little human interest stories. I'm just a reporter like everyone else. Is there some way I can tell my supervisor that yes, I do like those stories, but I like being a serious reporter even more?
