Imagine situation from coworker’s perspective. She feels she has enough work as it is, she is probably not getting paid enough and has terrible WLB already and then this coworker tells me he/she will “train” me to do more work!!! Why? Bcuz i have same access as them, seriously???
Just saying this is how she might be feeling.

It makes no sense to plan crosstraining with your coworker without discussing with your boss prior, because it's ultimately not your decision. If you brought it to your boss first, they could have decided if that person is the best fit and skill level to be crosstrained on that task. It would have shown initiative.
However, circumventing the boss shows you dont understand the bigger picture. If 2 people just resigned, there is already going to be a large reshuffling of responsibilities, which could look very different than things look currently. So your choice of person/task may be counteractive to that plan. It shows lack of regard towards the bigger decision making process your boss is responsible for, plus overstepping boundaries.
I'm sure it also came off very weird to your peer to be assigned something from a fellow peer. Very presumptive, unless they had expressed interest in learning on their own.
The original post specifically has a quote saying "a discussion needs to be had prior," implying no discussion was had.
If the boss DID actually tell them to do it, I'd be replying back with something along the lines of, "Based on our conversation on (insert date), my understanding was to (insert takeaways from conversation). As such, I spoke with (coworker) about setting time up to discuss." And you can offer to rediscuss again, this time summarizing the takeaways in an email after the meeting to ensure everyone is on the same page/CYA.

Wow. Great initiative on your part but I guess not everyone has career aspirations. Did you get any indication they didn’t want to move up or have closed mindset?
We have a tiny team of 7, 2 ppl just resigned. They’re best friends with the boss at the moment until they fall out again. Definitely have a closed mindset and are quickly overwhelmed
It wasn't wrong to loop in your boss
I would definitely document the conversation in writing, reminding your boss it was discussed and approved by them. The behavior from everyone (except you) in the situation is unsavory.

Take some PTO. Let them realize coverage is necessary. Not enough for utter chaos when you return—just enough to stress them out and make them realize someone does need to train.
I definitely take my PTO. The issue is my boss’ behavior, it’s very bipolar and mean girl energy
UPDATE: the boss isn’t speaking to me because I presented receipts including dates from when this was discussed throughout 2025: 1) meeting notes from my 1x1s 2) our Accountant’s meeting notes 3) emails and 4) Slack DMs
Woof, make sure HR is in on getting that info too.
