I swear finance recruiters have a sixth sense for sniffing out anyone who didn’t start in finance. I’ve got 3 years of consulting experience, an MBA from a top 20 program, and legit modeling skills, but every IB/PE role I apply to, I get boxed out as “nontraditional” or “not technical enough.” It’s frustrating when I know I can do the work, but I’m not coming from the “right” background. Anyone else make the pivot successfully? How do you get recruiters to see past the resume label?

Pivoting in takes strategy. Highlight your deal exposure, quantify your impact, and get warm intros if you can. Once someone hears how you think, they’ll realize you’re more qualified than most traditional candidates.

Is it a sixth sense or are they just reading your resume? I feel like there are ways you could overcome these markers by making your resume stronger and learning how to assuage any doubts in interviews. If it's always a problem, I'd also consider ways to shift your "non-traditional" start into a positive

Are recruiters reaching out to you or are you reaching out to them? If they are reaching out to you, they have already seen past your perceived resume issues. If so, it's the phone interview where your problem lies.

Took my first ever sick day today on account of my very poor and worsening mental health. Just could not bring myself to put in another 14 hour day with back to back meetings and constant activity. Felt very guilty but I honestly wish I could be more honest and actually share with my manager about why I took a day off.

For those also going through this, any tips on how you manage yourself day to day? What self talk tends to help?

I'm the only employee with a background in finance in a tech startup growing at a 300%+ per year. But it's actually my first finance-related experience (interned and now part-time as I'm in my senior year of undergrad) and don't know really how to have an impact as my knowledge is "limited" and have no technical mentorship.

Any advice/mentorship would be wonderful!
