I think you're right. But what actually is a bad officer is subjective. Is your idea of a perfect officer is someone entirely devoid of doing hurtful things?
What exactly do you consider to be a bad officer and I'll give you my example.
It is unfortunately common for prison guards to exhibit corrupt behavior, either through accepting bribes, taking part in smuggling operations, or engaging in physical or sexual abuse of inmates. However, with tight oversight and strict codes of conduct, it is possible to minimize the amount of corruption in prisons. Personally, I have seen some bad eggs in my time.
First, you must define corruption & what is acceptable. I was taught in the police academy that something as harmless as accepting a discounted meal or a free drink is corruption in its simplest form. So, I would ask, where is the community standard, agency standard, & the acceptable plateau?
I actually took over the position of a once corrupt jail officer. It's a fact and not an assumption. He was relieved from his duties and was not allowed to work for any penitentiary.
If it's not corrupt, it's objectively a failure. No effort is made to rehabilitate, and those who do leave have a high likelihood of coming back.
A Texas state prison is close to the hospital where I used to work. I've taken x-rays of numerous convicts who had severe wounds and were clearly the victims of steel-toed boot kicks. The guards are the only people in the prison wearing steel toe boots.
To all the officers who claim, "I'm not one of those guys," and ask why they receive criticism for being officers, the answer is that they don't expose the wrongdoing that they witness every day from their "brothers in blue."
I have witnessed other CO's be brutally abusive to inmates and use their power over inmates. I have complained about it numerous times and the warden acts as though theirs nothing that can be done about it. I am lookinf for another job I can't do this anymore
I was the Security Director of the Detention Center. I held my staff accountable and everyone in the facility knew it. One area I did not tolerate was excessive force. I personally investigated and exported Video every time Force was used. This video was used to exonerate us 99% of The time; but occasionally it served the inmates purposes—which was fine by me. I reported my sheriff and chief for being corrupt and was subsequently forced to resign. The system is broken…. Change is needed.
