I haven't made the switch but I looked into becoming a credit analyst for a while as well. Basically it all boiled down to: if you're not going to go back to school, you need to find an employer willing to train you. A background in insurance and the BS in business help some, but not enough. A Google certificate also helps, but isn't a guarantee if you're up against candidates with a BS in finance or accounting. If you can really highlight your experience with risk assessment you might get lucky, though. Look for places advertising training.
I would find a smaller RIA or possibly take a pay cut to work for one of the larger brokerages as a subordinate. I get more applications for analysts than I care to mention. Most of them have no experience. Ultimately you have to realize that every financial advisor thinks they know how to run a portfolio. It takes a special person to really make a difference.
