I want to prepare for UPSC now after working for 4yrs in IT job. This is going to be a journey full of challanges and difficulties but,

What are the things to keep in mind ? Is it worth it now start preparing for UPSC at the age of 26? Should I leave the job or prepare with job ? What would you suggest?

For First year , Prepare along with your job and see if you have the capacity and will to give a serious attempt. If your appetite increases after the end of an year and you atleast clear prelims, you can take a break for actual attempt

What's pop up in your mind when you think about UPSC, what is the motivation behind UPSC preparation, which reasons you are thinking to get into the Civil service. You have good job with decent package. Think around the current job and what you are aspiring is not impossible but not easy as we thought. I am not pulling you back just wanted to be clear what you have and what you want. You can apply 5 why here to dig into your dreams and then take the decision. I would suggest that do not quite your job at very initial time of preparation. Start studying as per syllabus and then you will get idea about how you can manage Study and Job.
Kindly note this is my personal suggestion you can do what you want.

Bhai people commenting here don't know s... Even if you have a package of 1cr in IT, you'll not be able to get the "maza" that you'll get as an entry level IAS officer.. i saw someone saying salary is 70k,..😂😂😂...
If you can manage go for it.. but i would suggest don't leave your job.. even if you get into state pcs, it is worth it...

At 26 even if you clear the exam in first attempt. You'll be 28 when you join the service after academy. This leaves you with 32 years of service.

You need 30 years of service to work as a secratary in central ministry so unless you have exceptional performance you'll get very short amount of time and will not be able to see any policies you implement come to fruition.

However you will get a chance to serve as the chief secretary of a state or multiple even if you clear it after the age of 30. Plus your work experience will help you stay in touch with reality and help with decision making compared to freshmen.

So if you feel it is your calling. Go for it. It's better to attempt than regret later on in life. Plus you have more financial stability and later your workEx will help if you want to rejoin IT sector. If you are just doing it as you are frustrated with current field/work culture etc. Stick in this field and try to switch.

Not very easy to prepare along with a job, unless you are just testing the waters and not serious about getting a top 200 rank the first 1-2 times.

Only 3 real dimensions exist in our world. If can afford all 3, go for it. Else lots of other things that you can pursue
1. Job and Upsc cannot go together. If fine without job or fine with state PSC, go for it.
2. Motivated for UPSC if wanted to do something for nation, thus will be honest then and fine with small packages middle class life, go for it. For other reasons like Dowry, Social status, pride, etc. Kindly let it be, As life would be much appreciated in IT sector. We can actually live our life in our own terms.
3. If you are fine working for government even after your retirement, go for it. Duties of Civil servants also includes monitoring over different projects and people, and thus end up being connected to hundreds of civil and criminal cases filed in your tenure. By experience, can tell you that you need to be available for different hearings even after your retirement. Worst part most people don't know about.

helpful

I would not recommend you to go for it for two reasons:
1. Considering you make it in the very first attempt you, let's assume you would be in LBSNAA by 27 and assume the office of SDM by 29, your salary would be max 70K and by the time you retire, the max you would be making is 3Lkhs. I am sure this is not the amount of money you would want to have considering the boom IT sector is having right now.

2. I work closely with offices of IAS officers and have worked with around 10 officers. Officers change but one thing which remains constant is the treatment which they get from politicians. Unfortunately that's the construct of our constitution.

Well, few of you would argue that the respect which an IAS officer gets is un unimaginable but practically i can't feed my family with respect.

PS: the above listed are my personal thoughts and reasons why I never appeared for it. I can be tagged as a coward as well because I never had the balls to take the risk which is true because I have full faith in my stars for not supporting me on the judgement day.

Need career advice. Trying to break into a finance role, preferably an Analsyt role but I have no transferable experience. I worked as a mortgage loan officer (which is sales) for 2 years after college, but since mortgage is such a niche industry, no hard skills transfer and have no relevant undergrad internships unfortunately. I know I can essentially get any sales job I want in finance IE: financial advisor etc. but don’t want to be stuck in sales forever. Any advice?
