you’re probably not gonna get paid the average when you start the role.
average = (highest + lowest)/total people
however, if you’re being underpaid at your current job, ask for market value (higher, actually) at the next gig, because they don’t know how much you’re currently making. oh ya, don’t tell them how much you make right now, they don’t need to know that.
Honestly just concentrate on doing good work, at being good at your job. Its not just the time you put in, its not just catching a train. Its the people you work with being impressed, then recommending you somewhere else. So just do a good job, its the best way to advance your career.
If there’s possibility to be promoted internally in two years, I’d wait to switch once you get the promotion. That would be the way you’d see the largest jump in the shortest amount of time, because the money someone offers you when you already have the title will be higher.
biggest jump is when you can move up a level. then ask for what you’d expect to get as a raise (15%) plus more (another 10% maybe?).
What if senior planner roles on average make around 50% more than what I currently make? Could I expect more of an increase than 15%?
You’re ready for your next title when someone will give it to you. Some hiring managers put a ton of weight on time/experience, but a lot of others don’t, and demand/urgency/luck are huge factors. I was promoted to a senior, left for a manager spot, then hired as an AD in a span of about nine months, although of course there were a lot of variables.
There are a ton of variables involved in pay as well, but if you’re hired to a new agency vs being promoted you should be paid more than the average, because the average incorporates internal promotions that are paid substantially less.
When you have done work others covet.
Focus on the work not the title.
