This is a very depressing bowl, I have kids and think public accounting is awesome due to the flexibility!

You may be the exception to the rule. You may be in an office or on a team with more flexible management and deadlines. You may be excellent and communicating your needs. Most people have a tough time balancing kids and PA.

like

I agree - I think the flexibility is great. I had three kids (when I was a senior, manager and senior manager) at PwC while working on big public jobs in a large office. I had flexibility truly when I was a manager, but saw some as a senior.

As a SM now who travels 1-2 days a week, I feel like I have control over my schedule, work from home when I need to and am able to make daycare pickup/drop off at a normal time, be there for school events, take my kids to soccer practice and do the occasional field trip chaperone when I want.

The flexibility is what keeps me here!

like

PwC 2 - I was offered choice to go to larger city if I wanted to get on partner track but figured that would mean much less family time so chose not to go, eventually found regional firm that was flexible and now regional firm as merged into CLA so I’m back with big firm but still have flexibility

like

When you’re a manager and above you have way more flexibility. It’s harder when you’re a staff/senior.

like

I completely agree - I coached all three of my girl’ soccer teams, made just about every school function, and have been there as they’ve grown up.

Principal 1- what rank were you when you had kids?

PwC 2 I was a manager at a small city PWC office

Principal 1 - I think the key there is the smaller city office. I'm currently in one of the largest offices in the country, A2, got married last year, and strongly considering relocating within 1-2 years to a mid size city city office to start a family at mid senior level.

Principal 1 - At what point in your career was the offer to relocate to larger city if you wanted to get on partner track? Manager / SM 1-3 / SM 4-6 ?

PwC 2 - discussion started as manager and continued to SM but I eventually said no and at said I’d stay career SM, an option at the time

Senior 1- true but WAY more responsibility and much higher expectations. Hours tend to be longer due to more travel, client entertainment, presentations to do, etc. Sorry to burst your bubble but is reality (25+ yrs in public)

Agreed
I think you have to fix some minimum boundaries on what you need to do and be involved with your kids and schedule from there - it may mean adjusting your schedule so you work really early or late to see their event or be with them
Make the time with them count, schedule vacations so they can look forward to that time
Have dates with them so they know you care
Yeah we can’t all be there every night but we can make it work if you are thoughtful and proactive

My friend has following offers from three companies after MBA (two offcampus and one from campus)

1. Finance Effectiveness/ EPM role at one of the Big 4
2. Deal Advisory role at one of the Big 4
3. Organization strategy role from one of the top consulting companies (not Big 4)

Which role offers the best exit options? All the offers from US support teams of the companies.
OS role offers better than the other two (only slightly), but I am interested in a good profile

like

I am in a tech IC position. One of friends switched to FAANG by converting the profile to consultant profile. The friend who might have less tech knowledge than me is now in FAANG and earning more. If the end goal would be that the friend might one day be a product manager and me an engineering manager taking instructions from the same friend, isn't consultant profile an easier path to growth. I had been practising DSA for years and the competition is only ever growing.

Thought on coaching as a viable side gig? Who has done it?

About to quit a job in just one month of joining... what should I do...just hit the exit button, or keep a call with the Manager or the HR?

What are the things that I should say as the reason to quit so that I face the least issues.
I am just quitting for a better opportunity but don't want to burn the bridges here at the same time.

Would request the experienced fishes to help me with this. I am new to these kind of situations and really need help with how to handle this.

Hi all,
I’m currently working for a small technical consulting start-up firm. I make good money, have great benefits, and they seem very happy with the work I’m doing, so I know I could move up quickly. However, tech consulting is definitely not my dream job. I want to get into data analytics, and I have an offer from a big company to do just that. I’ve only been at my current company for about 8 months, but I don’t ever see myself loving this job. How do I know when it’s time to make a change?

Thoughts on the "fake it til you make it" mentality in career growth? Regarding a Front End Developer role.

I passed the HR screen, did an interview with who would be my) supervisor and the team lead, and am now doing a coding test.

I am familiar enough with the language (React) and pushing updates to Git in order to complete the test, but I'm afraid when I do a panel with the team to review my design, I'll end up making a fool of myself.

I've never been so excited yet so nervous for a role.

Are you living in the moment?

People say this all the time, but do you know what that means or how to do it?

Living in the moment, or being present, means you are mindful and enjoying what is happening right now and not distracted by the distant past or future worries.

Being present is HARD because our mind likes to wander.

Here are 4 key themes of people who live (and thrive) in the present moment:

1. Focus on your breath
2. Be curious
3. Find your flow
4. Forgive yourself and others
