Just tell them that, "The job wasn't the right fit." And if they try to get any more information out of you then just repeat yourself and tell them there's nothing more to tell.
Agreed! It’s more about the story you tell yourself - what other people say about you behind your back is none of your business or concern!
Lesson learned, you moved on. Welcome your new colleague like you would anyone else, no additional explanation needed about why either of you departed. For all you know they have a similar story...or not. Keep rocking at your new role!

They are probably also happy to be at a new firm
This. You don’t really know how they left either, right? I would just be focused on your current firm and the future - I’m sure they will be in a similar mindset and be more interested in hearing your insider tips about the new firm given your similar background.
When you do speak to this person and this person brings it up, just say that you've moved on and prefer not to revisit history.
It’s really none of their business

Get ahead of the story, don’t wait for it to come to you. Control the narrative. You don’t need to gossip about the other person but if their name comes up in conversation, you can say something like “yeah, we were colleagues at Firm X. I didn’t have a great experience there, but it had nothing to do with Colleague. The company culture wasn’t a good fit for me.”
