I thought for sure I was going to be a sports agent. I spent my summer after freshman and sophomore years interning at a boutique agency in town. Two weeks before the start of the summer after my junior year, the agency called to tell me they were shutting down and that I no longer had an internship for that summer.
I then went to work for a boutique consulting firm, then got into BCG post mba, and now work in VC
I was an incredibly pissed off 21 year old when my internship and assumed future job got canceled, but very thankful for my parents for encouraging me to start something new

I thought I was going to be an automotive engineer, and I did that for a little while, but it wasn’t as glamorous as I thought, then I went into aerospace thinking it would be better, but it was worse, except I got to work with some consultants, I got curious about their job, researched that career a little, applied to McK and here I am discussing points and credit cards on Fishbowl.

I originally wanted to do engineering consulting (EPCM) but ended up being more interested in management consulting
Wanted to be an engineer, ended up being an accountant who is still figuring out what to do in the future.

I started as a Chemical Engineer. Worked for a Process design engineering major. I didn’t like it. Got into MBA a year later. Got into Sales & Marketing for Oil Major. After another 2 miserable years, I jumped into B4 in Internal Audit. 5 years on, I switched to Tech Risk, 3 years hence I switched to Data Privacy Audits. I don’t think I’m still done changing directions. Some changes were natural- some were not. And I learnt from every job and career.

I thought I would be a career Marine…a few too many concussions and they wouldn’t let me passed MEPS. So now I’m analyzing data in environmental engineering after working for various levels of government organizations from TS kind of stuff to Save the Birds kind of stuff. Live throws you curve balls man

I was going to be one of those engineers in a racing team - went to a really good school and was interviewing with the right companies. But ended up in finance ✌️
Marketing to consulting now
I thought I wanted to work at the UN and was an international relations major. I got pretty darn close with going to the UN a lot with a federal agency. Learned that I hated policy work. And now work in construction/real estate.
Maybe it was just the UN and other aging, creaky orgs that turned you off? Construction/real estate can be a creative path too, glad you're settled into it :)
Thought I wanted to get my phd in psychology and then teach at a small university. Studied sociology, was research faculty at a big university (kind a living that initial dream!) Grants ran out after 10 years so i switched to doing research for a consulting firm and now I run a UX research team for a big company.
Alt-Ac careers are always fun!

I thought I was going to be a sports broadcaster and move down to Texas for college. Stayed in NY and compliance stuff.
Wanted to not be poor. Am now a manager of scientists in diagnostics. Not a bad gig and I am not poor.
I didn’t know what I wanted to be and still don’t know 🤡
