With the experience you gained, I would quietly start looking around for Director roles, to see what's out there.
Personally, I would take a wait and see approach. At this point, is everyone sure the director is coming back? A year is a long time.
If they do come back, you're going to have to let go of the director role and go back to senior manager. Are you ok with that? It's going to be a huge adjustment to staff and I see them coming to you for things for a long time, not the director.
The biggest issue I see is that you are not being compensated for the director role. If they want to extend your interim status, you need to put your foot down for better compensation. Lay out everything you've done in a factual way, with the hard numbers to back you up.
Don't do anything. The higher-ups saw what you did and they would decide the fate of the previous leader without your input. You may only let the boss of SD know that you expect a promotion, so he is clear on that.
Set a meeting with them, talk about what you did, and ask for feedback. And then ask them about their development plans for you, and say “I hope that during this time I have proven myself to be offered a promotion. What do you think? Is there anything else I need to do to make sure that I won't be overlooked?”
Update your resume to show your accomplishments and start seeing what other opportunities exist outside your organization. Sometimes the only way to move up is to move out.
Respectfully, you already did the work on a senior managers salary lol and it doesn’t matter what others say if they aren’t your bosses or have a critical say in who is the director. Not to sound like a prick but the reality is you are worried at the wrong time lol my hope for you is that upon the return of the director that they carve a space for you to move up or the director pivots to another opportunity and your work is recognized by the leadership and you are given the opportunity to be the director and be compensated accordingly. But your concern should have been in working through your career progression and strategy as you notice areas of improvement and opportunities to grow the effectiveness and efficiency of the department; so that you didn’t leave yourself without a progression and a potential conflict with the director.
Hi!
Well done on your great work!
Here’re a few thoughts to share with you:
I would start by looking into who is that “everyone” who has been saying that you are more suited for a director role?
Are those people who are decision makers in the company? If yes, did you have a chat with them to discuss potential next opportunities?
Are you 100% sure there´s no room to move to a director role? Did you have such conversations?
From what I´m understanding from your post, Senior Director is on leave but what about the Director role?
What would you like to do? What would ideal role and compensation look like for you?
Especially now as you have proven yourself, created amazing results, received such great feedback... you may want to have some conversations internally now.
I would start by getting clear on what specifically I would like to suggest as my next step and what kind of value would such move bring for the whole business. Then, identify who is the right person to have a chat with to hear their thoughts and share your ideas.
It’s not about you trying to get the role of the person who’s on leave but based on all your accomplishments - talking about your next step sounds like a totally reasonable topic to have a conversation about.
Also, I would think about what if there truly is no room for growth? Would you be ok with staying in the same situation as it is right now or are you more inclined to start looking elsewhere?
Wish you all the best!
