Advice needed - boyfriend has almost 3.5 years of finance experience at a bank. Interviewed for PwC valuation senior associate and now recruiter says they want to hire him at “experienced associate” because he has no valuation experience. Is this too big of a step backwards in career? Should he push back and see if it gets him anywhere? If he does accept Associate, is it reasonable to ask for written, definitive timeline (1 year?) for promo to Senior upon meeting standards? Help!

You dodged a bullet if it took them 5 interviews to figure out what candidate background they wanted.
This!^^
Had a similar experience but the recruiter also told me, if we find ourselves looking again can we call you? I flat out said no. After 6 interviews I didn’t find the organization organized enough, ready for any commitment and didn’t value their employees if they were planning for this person to fail/quit without stepping foot in the door.
I think it's something new employer do just for fun. I had 5 interviews for an AP job and didn't get it. Who needs to piss on the AP person?
I don’t believe there was any malicious reason behind their actions. You’re justified in feeling angry. However, here’s an alternative perspective. Suppose you truly impressed them to the extent that made them doubt their initial assumptions about the type of person they needed. I believe you impressed them so much that they interviewed you multiple times. Unfortunately, there was someone else with more relevant experience. Therefore, I think you did an excellent job, and you should be proud of yourself. Regardless of your current job, continue to excel in your interviews.
One final takeaway from this experience is that you not only interviewed exceptionally well but also should consider changing your expertise. Sales tax is a relatively limited field and certainly not glamorous. Explore other tax areas that may be more appealing to you.
If I have more than three I withdraw myself from the process.
CPA firms aren’t doing well right now we just had to revoke an offer from someone who accepted months ago. Likely the people you interviewed with wanted to bring you on but firm leadership vetoed their decision.
Had a similar experience last year. What I was told they were looking for I was close to, being exacting as they apparently were they could have just said no and saved me and them hours.
Exactly take it as you dodged a bullet and better things on the horizon. DCPA firms are ruthless nowadays.
So sorry you went through that l. I don’t think any of these companies recognize talent when they see..I wouldn’t want to work for a company that requires you to attend 5 interviews. After the third i would’ve been done.
It’s completely natural to feel disappointed, but it’s important to remember that the expectations were ones you set for yourself—there was never a firm guarantee of being hired. Rather than dwelling on what didn’t happen, focus your energy on what you can control: keep refining your resume, keep applying, and trust that the right opportunity will align with your efforts. No one wronged you here—sometimes, it’s just not the right fit. Stay resilient and keep moving forward.
You should come up with a positive approach to learn the sales tax quickly in the interview.
