What jobs are currently paying 85k?
How early is too early to ask for a raise?
Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

Instead of pushing for more upfront, accept the offer and focus on proving your value. Set a performance-based review in 3–6 months tied to a raise. It’s a safer way to secure better pay without scaring them off early.
Was the range 5-10k lower than what your ideal is? I think you can ask if there’s any wiggle room on salary once presented the offer. If they say they can ask, perhaps ask for 5k…and expect 2k
Thank you for your response! The gap between the offer and the ideal market rate is around $20K. By requesting a small adjustment, I can bring the offer closer to the midpoint and ensure it’s more aligned with current market standards.
Sorry to hear you were laid off. The job market is really rough right now so I totally understand. Until an offer is made, you can negotiate. I would definitely try to ask for a little more.
