Start your own consulting business in the industry you know. Call up companies and propose how you help them achieve their specific business outcomes.
That sounds incredibly tough, and I’m really sorry you’re going through this. Six months of applying with so little response would shake anyone’s confidence. One thing that’s helped others I know is working with a career coach (even just a few sessions) to refresh their resume and approach. Also, have you tried reaching out directly to hiring managers or tapping into industry associations for referrals? Even volunteering or consulting short-term can help build momentum and open new doors. Your experience matters—let’s get it seen.
I'm sorry you're dealing with all that. I know how frustrating it can be. My recommendation would be to have somebody audit your resume. It's possible that it's not optimized for the jobs you're trying to apply for. There are plenty of people online who would be willing to look over and adjust your resume to match the jobs you're going for. I'm also curious about your interviewing approach. Where are you applying, and are you following up? My last job I only got because I called them and asked about the status of my application and they scheduled an interview on the spot. Each job gets thousands of applications, but there are things we can do to help stand out among the crowd. Following up is definitely one of them.
I'm in the same boat. I turn 60 in a few months and have been looking for a year in May. I need some sound advise....
Use A.I. ( chatgpt, copilot, gemini).
1. find a job to apply to.
2. Review job responsibilities & qualifications.
3. Try to match as close as possible to your resume.
its better if you do it yourself. don't depend on A.I. at this point.
4. click to highlight ALL the bullet points of responsibilities & qualifications. On a separate tab open an A.I. chatbot of your choice (chatgpt, copilot, gemini) copy and paste the job qualifications
5. then copy and paste your resume below. [shift key + enter key] to create a space below and move down the chat box of the a.i.
6. Make sure to indicate which is your job qualifications and your resume so the A.i. chat bot won't get confused.
7. After the results, ask the A.I to improve your resume.
this time you can depend on a.i. but not so much, it is still better to use your own thinking and way of words.
8. Make sure to add your own words and check everything for keywords. keywords are very important.
I hope this could help.
Definitely take advantage of any job placement services offered by your company when they closed if available, resumes and such have changed in their formatting and what we did 20 years ago and what is currently acceptable are different. If the outplacement company can assist with AI tools, learn how to use them to customize your résumé for the various jobs you are applying for. Don’t be afraid to take a job that has lower base than what you previously earned if there’s something such as commission or merit based profit sharing to bridge the gap don’t be afraid to say you’re willing to show them you’re worth. If your company did not provide outplacement services, check your college alumni office for those services and if necessary, be willing to pay for the resume review and assistance with AI. Also consider contract work to bridge the gap.

Thanks
I have been in computer and software sales for over 40 years. I found a job at age 62. I had a streak of working 30 years no layoff. Then in the course of 10 years I was laid off 4 time. Each time I found a job from someone I knew in my industry or a friend just by letting people know you are looking. That is how I found a job. I also applied for job on-line got a few interviews but seemed at the 3rd or 4th interview I lost out.
I have been going through the same issue. Our division was closed, I was a top producer and I feel like I have the “Zillow Curse”! If we were not responsible for their closing a division and we were top producers, why would they not give us another position? I was recently told by other employees that they will never rehire any “severed” employees? Has anyone else experienced this from the Zillow Offers division?
Suggest only showing on your resume the last 15-20 years.
