I made the transition from commercial auto claims to commercial lines underwriter in the spring of 2025. If you think you’d like the sales aspect of agent work then it would likely be a good pivot. I unfortunately didn’t realize my carrier I currently work for is heavy production underwriting and not technical underwriting. So it’s very sales heavy in my underwriting seat which doesn’t really fit me. Where I’m going with this is, production underwriting may be a good fit for you as it involves some of the sales aspect and you’d still get to use your investigation skills coming from claims.
Appreciate that advise. I have tried to find some underwriting roles as I was thinking the same thing regarding the investigation aspect. I actually work in a claims unit that is also very involved in underwriting review for policies after they are in force so I have a good amount of experience in that field. Do you know of any companies or positions that are more of the underwriting rather than sales, because I find that same issue where the positions are posted as underwriters but it’s clear they are more on the sales side from their descriptions. Seems like companies use “underwriter” interchangeably with straight sales positions these days.
Pay potential is unlimited as an agent but it’s a difficult job.
