Vice President 1, if someone comes here to talk about how they are concerned about gaining weight, please don’t be that annoying person who talks about how you gained hardly any weight and managed to have enough self control to add only a latte to your diet. As someone who gained 65 lbs while I was pregnant, I empathize with OP’s concerns and your response is absolutely tone deaf and unnecessary.
I agree with D1, your comment isnt particularly helpful to someone feeling insecure. I’m clearly struggling with not just “eating normally” and I’ve already gained almost as much as you did your whole pregnancy and I’m not quite half way. Thanks for sharing I guess but I don’t think we are in the same boat at all. You sharing that on this thread makes it seem like you’re trying to incite mommy wars, not the other way around.
Hi VP! It may slow naturally as you gain energy in second trimester. I craved higher calorie/fat foods like avocado and whole milk but walked 10K-15k steps a day. I was around the same weight gain (and chubby pre-pregnancy) at 18 weeks and it slowed up until 28-30 weeks. Winter hit and with a baby pressing on my lungs I fell off at the end and gained another 25 🥺. Low impact activities like swimming etc would have been ideal! It feels weird at first to see your body change so much but remind yourself these are incredible adjustments to birth human life!
I gained 45 pounds and lost it (and then some) 4-6 months postpartum. I hated how it felt and was so worried all pregnancy. It’ll be easier later - your body knows what to do. Be easy on yourself
Sure you can, but you may not need to. Is your doctor concerned?
Speaking from my own experience: I gained 45lbs over the course of pregnancy (which on a 5’3” person was pretty intense), 15lbs of which happened in the first tri. I didn’t have GD or high blood pressure or anything, was just pretty uncomfortable most of the time. My doctor was totally nonchalant about it, and I had an uneventful delivery and recovery, and lost all the weight eventually.
Everyone’s different - do what you need to do!
Good luck. I know different providers’ perspectives vary, but there is some credible thinking out there that weight gain and baby size are not causally related (and we are still really relatively bad at predicting a baby’s size before birth as it is).
But yeah, the first trimester can be kind of an outlier to the trend, in either direction. Between the fluid retention and the sometimes extreme changes in diet caused by nausea, it’s a wild ride.
Gaines 50lbs with each of my pregnancies. Lost it all within 4-6 months postpartum each time. It seems like my body just needed extra padding when creating a life. I’m not mad about it.
I think everyone’s body reacts differently to pregnancy, so it’s hard to know your trajectory. After my first trimester, I tried to focus on healthy meals as much as I could. I ate a lot of salmon, salads, chicken, etc. That way, when cravings struck I didn’t feel bad indulging because my general diet was pretty decent. I gained just under 40lbs, and I mostly put it on in short spurts.
Thank you. I was really sick the first tri and had to constantly eat to not be sick, but could only really eat bread so I’m sure they led to this. By now I’m feeling a lot better so trying to eat more fruits and veg and fish. My husband got in the habit of picking me up little treats so I had to ask him to stop, lol.
You’ll be surprised how little ‘weight’ you gain in the last trimester - some weeks you won’t gain at all. There’s not much room for eating a lot over 35 weeks and a fair portion of the weight gain is liquid and you’ll lose that when you have your baby!
I had the opposite experience - I gained about 20of my 35 total in the last tri.
I ate what I wanted and didn’t worry about it. I gained 55lbs and lost it all and an extra 20 by breastfeeding.
I’m in a similar boat. I’m at 13 weeks, about 20lbs over weight pre pregnancy. Honestly, I can’t look at the scale right now, I start crying.
I’m 5’0” and just gave birth 2.5 weeks ago! I gained a total of about 35lbs and most of it came first trimester and slowed down second a bit and then I was gaining about half a pound every 1-2 weeks in third trimester. Please remember a lot if this is placenta/water/baby, so 2.5 weeks I’ve already lost about 25 lbs. talk to your doctor and they’ll help you with a plan but my doctor said there’s a wide range based on beginning weight on what you should be gaining and we were on the lower end of what I needed to do to make sure baby grew but still kept me comfortable

Careful D2, D1 doesn’t like to hear about people who lose it easily!
Kidding! Congrats!
I’m 16 weeks PP today. I too started off chubby and gained a solid 10lbs first trimester. By the end I was up about 50/55 lbs as summer heat absolutely played a role, as much as genetics, salt intake, etc. There is always a way to “slow it down” but your body will also do what it needs for the baby and it can be infuriating. The bloating for me didn’t go down (meaning see normal leg shape and face shape) until about 10 weeks, however, the first month about 25 “lbs” were dropped. Another 5 over the last 6 weeks. I exercised until 1 month prior to birth and ate healthy and junk. The other side is the kind of birth you have. Interventions, etc. Be kind to yourself is all. And breastfeeding weight loss doesn’t happen for everyone, as it makes you hungrier than pregnancy (at least I found it that way).

Best thing my doc told me was that the extra calories I needed amounted to a full fat latte. So
I ate normally and had a latte. I was not allowed to exercise beyond walking, so I did 3 miles a morning until last 2 months.
I gained very little and showed late, but in the last month gained 10-15 in the last month. Total gained was about 25. Left the hospital with a 7lb kid and 9lbs to lose.
Everyone is different.
