I work in an inclusion setting in 4th grade Language Arts. We do novel studies throughout the school year. However, I have one student who has Autism and although he can read grade level material, he does not comprehend. The gen ed teacher does not do small group work in which different novels/chapter books could be utilized. Any ideas/thoughts/suggestions on how to service this student as well as my other inclusion students?????

I would suggest audiobooks and when it is time to work on questions have a small group discussion.

like

I love the idea of audiobooks. Yes I agree with small group discussion. Therein lies one of the problems in this gen ed class. The teacher does not do small groups which makes it a bit tricky to work with my Special Education students on material at their level. Thank you for your reply!

Preteach vocabulary and key concepts. Pull them before you read the novel to go over what they need to boost their comprehension.

like

Thank you! Great suggestions.

Please do not start by determining that this autistic student does not comprehend. They have more knowledge stored than we perceive. Give time for comprehension and maybe use another form of response for this student to participate.

like

I should clarify that he is not successful in comprehending a novel like Number the Stars. When the material is relatable and addresses content he likes he is definitely able to comprehend and discuss. The difficulty lies in the structure of the gen ed class in regards to mainly whole group work taking place whereas if there was small group time it would be easier to work with this student on different material.

There are many accommodations you can provide, here are a few:
reword questions, word banks, change type of question, reduce choices for multiple choice, scribe responses, extend time on test, read test to student, give test over multiple sessions, provide a choice board, give test in small group of 3-5 or less.

like

Thank you so much. Yes I do modify and provide accommodations. I appreciate your reply!

Is the student on an IEP? What is the Language goal. Does it target comprehension? Antecedent it. Ask for the story early so you can start to read and discuss it with the student. 2 or 3 read and discussions are always helpful with my kids. I

like

Yes this student has an IEP. The language goal is written around comprehension. Great suggestions for 2 or 3 reads. Building background knowledge and reading and re-reading have definitely helped! Thank you.

Does this student get speech or occupational therapy services? Might help!

Yes he gets both of those services and the OT and speech therapist and I work closely together. They have been very helpful with modifications and suggestions.

Many asd student struggle w comprehension and coding, working memory and processing speed. It’s surely not set in stone but it is a common cognitive profile for asd students. It’s also common for asd students to have co-occurring conditions such as asd and adhd, asd and anxiety or asd and both anxiety and adhd.

Can you use books at his level for comprehension as you service him?

Academic interventions are clearly not my forte.

Thank you! Yes, instead of using the current novel, Number the Stars, I chose a chapter book that was more applicable and relatable for him. It has made a big difference. It is tricky because the gen ed teacher mainly does whole group work so I have been pulling this student out to work separately with him during the novel study time which is great, but I also have 6 other inclusion students to service at the same time. I think the problem lies in the classroom structure.

like

Pre-teach vocab and find some visuals to reinforce concepts in the book. Perhaps a short slide show for each chapter to make it relatable. Inference can be hard for some individuals with ASD. Maybe specific work on summarization and inference skills to aid comprehension?

Less of a question, more of a request... stop asking your junior BIPOC strats to work on BLM briefs because they are the only voice of color on your team. In a time where we need support grappling with our very REAL realities and how it impacts how we show up in the agency, the LAST thing we need is an “opportunity” to express our “unique POV” on a diversity brief (that we won’t even get to speak to none the less). Imagine having to chanbel your trauma into a deck to sell in an idea to clients?

Controversial question - what are some roles/functions to avoid at Google for ex-management consultants, in terms of potential under-utilization of skills and limited career progression? Is QEF inclusion dividend or not? Sometimes, I see QEF inclusion reported on Line 11i and sometimes on Line 6a. I think we can rely on Sec. 1293(c) but I think it’s not foolproof. My hunch is since QEF regime is tailored to treat the PFIC similar to domestic mutual funds, we should not treat the QEF inclusion as dividends. Any help is appreciated.

Hi SpEd Teachers, is anyone else facing EXTREME staff shortages as a result of state funding? We are not able to meet my students' IEP requirements (not even close) due to not enough paraprofessionals and the district flat out refusing to hire more. I've lost 70+ hrs/week of para hours over the past few years and my students are really suffering. This leaves our district open to lawsuits, but the real problem is the state's education budget. What can we do?? This isn't going to fix itself.
