I’d really appreciate any advice. I recently moved to the U.S. and have over 20 years of general ledger accounting experience in another country. and I earned a QuickBooks Level 1 certification .
after months of applying to entry-level bookkeeping jobs, I haven’t even received a single interview.

I’m wondering: am I being seen as overqualified for junior roles? Or is it simply the lack of U.S. experience?

Has anyone faced something similar? How did you get your first opportunity?

Apply to different levels of bookkeeping jobs. You might be seen as overqualified. Employers might be concerned that you have a knowledge deficiency when it comes to GAAP since other countries may use IFRS or something else (just going on what we are taught here). Shouldn't be as relevant in bookkeeping instead of accounting positions, but some people may think it is.
You may also try specialist positions like accounts payable/receivable specialist, etc. Look at job description over titles. There are even admin jobs that are heavy on the bookkeeping duties in many organizations. The job market is rough right now, so the best advice I have is to network as much as you can and keep an open mind when it comes to jobs you are willing to consider!

Reach out to a recruiter. There’s tons of them on LinkedIn: some good ones, plenty of bad ones- but they should be able to help you by getting your foot in the door.

Applying for entry level jobs yourself is a red flag for many people looking to hire, but with a recruiter, they can initiate that initial discussion with them and be able to state why you’re looking for a job you may seem overqualified for (to get your footing in the US market).

Thank you for your pertinent advice. I will try it.

It is a tough market right now and you arr competing against cpas and people with accounting degrees with alot of acctg experience as well. I would reach out to a recruiter like Robert half who will help you get in front of someone.

Yes! I have both the education and experience, just not from the U.S.
I’m staying positive and hope the job market picks up soon.😄

Hi fishes,

I have the following 2 offers..

Cognizant- 21L fixed and 1.5L variable
PWC - 22L fixed

This is for a guidewire role.
Which is a better offer? What would be a good option for growth wrt role, salary etc.
Also, PWC claims to offer variable based on their fixed CTC based on the ratings.. is this true ? How much is the avg percentage given?

Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone, I'm new to Canada and want to start my career here in the Financial and Banking industry. I have passed the CFA level 2 exam and was wondering if I have to complete the Canadian Securities Course (CSC) as most of the job postings here mention about it. I saw that if someone passes at least the CFA level 1 exam then the requirement of CSC is exempted. Can anyone enlighten me about this? As the CSC exam costs above 1000 CAD, I wanted to be sure if I need it before investing behind it.

I left PA earlier this year for a manager level financial reporting role. It was a lateral move but would’ve been up for senior manager promo in July had I stayed in PA. I was approached with another opportunity as Sr Manager Financial Reporting at a public company for $150k and 20% bonus with a clear path to director in time. 8 YOE and live in FL. I’m trying to get an idea if this is in line with market. TIA!
