If a recruiter asks why am I trying to leave only after 2 years, is it okay to say “because of money”? All the recruiters I’m talking to seem to think I’m trying to leave because I suck at my job

recruiters still have the mindset that people value things like company loyalty in 2021… skills and talent are essentially infinitely transferable as much as you make them. we ALL simply just want the best compensation possible for these precious hours of our lives were trading away and anyone that disagrees with that is a liar.

I can't believe they think 2 years is not a reasonable amount of time, assuming you're earlyish in your career.

like

OP - these recruiters must be bottom tier. I left B4 right after I got promoted to senior as well. Never had an issue with recruiters thinking I'm performing poorly. I would not worry about what they are saying

like

No, say you’re looking to get experience with another firm/in a different industry.. it’s ok to seek more money when moving but it shouldn’t be the primary driver for the move unless you are significantly under paid. Even then you shouldn’t admit that to the recruiter.

like

No. They will think you’re just in it for pay and will leave if a better offer comes. We all know that is true…but we dance around it, by saying we want to gain this experience. Or that you have friends working there and they love it.

likesmart

D1 I think you’re misunderstanding what I am saying. I am talking about from the company’s perspective. They know everyone wants more money (I mean, who doesn’t?). But they want to know that you are excited to join their origination, to work with them and grow with them. And saying ‘I am just here for more money’ won’t resonate well from HR and leadership perspective. It’s comes off as purely mercenary and that you will leave at any off that get you slightly ahead. And sure most people will leave if they get a great offer. But it’s a silly dance we all do…but you have to do it.

2 years is not bad. Surprised to see this question from recruiter.

like

Tell the recruiter you are looking for a challenge

like

I'm sure he'd appreciate your candor and brevity but I suspect best practice is to lie in this circumstance or at least embellish.

I feel like this only applies if you move to lower tier. If you worked at 2 years at Big 4 and trying to switch to MBB, no one will ask that.
But if you at Big 4 and trying to go boutique or tier 2, then they might ask that.
Unless you are completely switching the industry by going to the industry from consulting, they shouldn’t be asking you that dumb question.

They’re just curious. There’s no pointed question here

Wonder if anyone can offer advice on which cert to pursue next? I obtained my CompTIA Security+ last year and wondering if I should go for the CySA+ or Pentest+ next. I also have my AWS CCP and will be sitting for the Solutions Architect soon as well. Currently not doing security stuff at work but would love to keep my skills going. I was hoping one of these next certs will help me finally break into a security role and love the idea of pentesting but not sure if the CySA+ is more beneficial.

My book is just spec and side projects. I’m trying to get a new junior-to-mid role because I’ve gotten nothing good produced where I’m at, and I have zero faith this will change if I stick around.

I’m asked for work samples from recruiters and CDs even though I make clear that what I’ve done doesn’t reflect who I am as a creative. Think CRM/DM/B2B stuff. They insist on it, and I never hear back afterwards.

Not sure what to do. Almost feel like I’d be better off erasing my agency experience.

I would love to hear from working moms in senior leadership roles to understand if it’s possible to balance both, or is it best to wait a few more years? Not happy currently and looking to move, but unsure of pursuing lateral vs. a promotion
