You can try, but if you're too far apart, it's a bit pointless.
Even if you get the number up closer to where you want it, there’s a very good chance a place like that will basically make that money back over the coming years by giving you tiny or nonexistent raises.
I’d walk unless it’s close. If it’s a huge gap then I wouldn’t even bother. If they’re underpaying you out the gate then they are probably not great financially and will likely have other issues like high hours, poor boundaries, etc. The fact that they felt their offer was appropriate despite how low it is should tell you a lot.

Walk - if it really is a lowball (and not you having unrealistic expectations), then they will probably never value you appropriately.
I’ve been pretty thorough with my market research and everyone has told me I’d be “getting shafted.” I’m currently (supposedly) underpaid now and the offer that I got was a significant pay cut from where I’m at. Finally, I already had an offer from a different firm (dealbreaker office location and practice area) that was approx. $100k (or more) higher than this offer in terms of total comp, and another informal offer from another firm that was also about $100k higher. I feel pretty confident it’s a lowball
As a former attorney, who left the field for corporate world of legal tech, some factors to take into consideration: is this job in a nonprofit/gov space? They routinely pay lower but generally have lots of other benefits. Is this a small plaintiff’s firm “profit sharing” meaning that they pay lower hourly but you get a cut of every win? But, trust your gut. If the vibes are off, it’s not the right fit and don’t negotiate. But if it’s worth your time and effort, start the negotiation process. Moving to corporate, I was able to negotiate up $20k.
