If you’ve been in house for five years, and started a new role over a year ago with the intention of becoming a senior counsel at some point. How would you take it if your team posted a job for a senior counsel essentially doing exactly what you’re doing with all the requirements that you have (YOE, skills, etc.) and essentially the same pay band that you’re on? The legal team is also smaller so this would really cap my growth.

I have an informational interview with a Managing Director on Friday about a manager role. I currently serve in a client services role and do not have traditional consulting experience (billable hours, etc.). I’ve worked at the same firm for almost 5 years. I’ve received an end of year bonus of varying sizes- my first year, my paycheck was doubled. The last 3 years, I’ve received 25k-30k bonuses. This year I received a bonus in April (20k) and one in July (15k) but I still expected an end of year bonus. I didn’t get it even though this has been my most profitable year yet. Can anyone help me wrap my head around this post Series C start-up equity offer? It’s an IP director position, the the base is $170 with 10% bonus (both lower than I was expecting). There’s also an equity component: 0.15% of current fully diluted equity. This equates to about 30000 shares at a strike price of $2. They also indicate the preferred stock price is $6 and preferred stock equity is $188k (whatever that means). They are in the middle of a new financing and valuation round.

What is work-life balance like in big tech legal? I’m currently in house at a large multinational; I like my job and I get paid fine, with a very good WLB (40-45 hrs). I want to look into FAANG-type opportunities as they would mean a huge pay bump, and I think I’m qualified, but I have no idea about the hours, and I don’t want to substantially give up WLB, as that’s why I left BigLaw. I don’t want to be miserable again. I know Amazon is poorly reputed for lawyer WLB… what about other places?

Big law specialist with an offer to be the CFO and GC of a 250M AUM hedge fund. All in comp would probably be ~$300k, so about $100k less than where I would be in big law (including bonus). Potential to get involved in the business side, but most likely more of a back office role (I would also be the only legal hire - main goal would be cutting outside legal cost and streamlining processes). Does this sound like an attractive offer? What exit options would I have?

I went from meeting HR to the head of my department I’d be working for in 3 days. This seems fast. Does it to anyone else? It’s a super fast growing fin tech. I think they may just need bodies.
