Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

What others have said already. Be willing to walk. What will help even more is to have another better offer to back it up with. If you have that, they will either pay up or back off. Finally, reputation of the company will help too.
So, how do you take advantage from that info? Job switch between smaller and bigger companies. Say you start at a reputable company. You are paid $100k. When you apply for a smaller one, they want to “poach” you and are willing to pay a premium. Now, you can get paid for $150k-$200k with that jump. Your leverage on that is simple - why would I want to join a smaller company without substantial increase and they know it. Then after a few years, jump back to a reputable large company. Then your leverage is also simple - I’m making $200k already, so I want at least comparable income. I’ll get you another 10-20% increase. Rinse and repeat.

That’s a new idea. Thanks for sharing. I wish I was in the 100k range! 79k only here. Hoping to get more in the future.
The oldest negotiating advice in the book... be willing (and able) to walk away. The two times I've turned down offers they came back with a better offer later.
Of course, if you NEED the job, then this is difficult to do.

Yes, I kindve need it. I’m still applying at other jobs too. Thanks for sharing.
I've been clear in the things I've done at other companies that I can bring to them- citing the number of people I've recruited, partners I’ve helped bring on and other things outside the scope of my regular role ( I'm in sales) At times, this had resulted in an almost 20k higher base than my peers but sometimes companies have a top threshold they can pay with pay bands- but once I’m in I start building my value and document it to position future rasises. Good luck!

I appreciate your information. 20k higher sounds great!
The willingness and ability to walk away is huge. That’s also the strategy I apply to car shopping. Other than that, know your numbers. See what similar roles are bringing in, along with the size of the company and location.

Would it make sense to list numbers that I contributed as part of a team? Or find something that only I’ve done?

i've been able to negotiate my salary twice in my career. once i only increased it by $2k b/c i kept pressing that i wanted $5k more and we met at $2k more. and more recently i was contracting for 6 months for the company and they wanted to hire me full time. the offer was $15k lower than my previous role that i had been laid off from and asked if there was anything else that could be done. they came back with $5k more and said they couldn't do more for pay equity across the team.
there were other times when i tried to negotiate but the company held firm but it was still better than where i currently was so i capitulated.

I hope you can find something better for yourself. A little helps but it seems to be a long process.
