I haven’t experienced this in agency work but I’ve experienced this at my old retail job where I was promoted to a manager position and was forced to handle responsibilities outside my pay grade. I was constantly overworked and overwhelmed. I get it
I'm hearing this more and more. Why is "throw them in the deep end" everyone's strategy for grads? I admit sometimes pushing someone to do their best is good but what does constantly overworking and overwhelming them achieve?
From my limited experience it seems to be a product of smaller agency culture. We’re a small team so we operate with minimal structure and we all get our hands dirty to get projects across the finish line.
Whether that works or not I think depends on the individual. When I’m overwhelmed I freeze and get flustered (not great when you’re juggling multiple projects). I bet for others it pushes them to do their best work.
To have the expectation of have you as involved/neck deep in creative development AND also leading Strat. work is hella unreasonable. I genuinely commend you for the "I'm getting to learn about everything" attitude and everyone here will tell ya that it's all about trial by fire, but the only way (IMO) to learn and hone your skills (to make the career you want in Advertising) is for you to communicate your need for support (Such as a Strategist you can tag team planning, PM/fellow AE to help you understand the nuances of creative development upfront, etc.) we'd all like to "be setup for success," in the places we work at and sometimes it's not possible (due to resources, structure, etc.) but if you don't voice your concerns to your superiors from a perspective of genuine career growth within your organization, that overwhelming feeling will take a lot longer to dissipate. Just a thought. :)
If you need a hand feel free to reach out.
It can be overwhelming in the moment, but those are skill sets you’ll return to as you grow in your career. As a producer, if my account understands what goes into my job, it makes that job much easier, bc they speak the language already.
Feel free to DM if you want to chat anything through
This was my first job. I worked too much, which was not good for my health - so please take care and set boundaries. I’m a curious person and I got some help from designers, PMs etc to figure some steps out along the way in each project. One day it all fell into place, and I went from survival mode to “I got this” mode. But it took years. Looking back, I always succeeded despite the feeling of failure. I am always reassured that I’ll figure things out because of this experience. But I don’t think that it’s the right method given the stress. If I could go back, I’d try and be a bit more vulnerable to a few leaders and get some more support.
Unfortunately, this is not a unique experience. I see and hear about this issue in new accounts people constantly and that it’s like treading water until one day, everything just falls into place. I hear a lot of people say they feel like they woke up one day and finally understood how to do this job.
That’s honestly reassuring. Hoping that day comes sooner rather than later.
