How can a consultant shift into banking?
Stop being afraid of getting what you want out of life. Ask for more, work harder. Learn more about coding and quit the job that doesn’t meet your needs. Things never get “easier” in life, you just get better. Good luck on your future endeavors
Thanks, I asked for a raise already and was able to get a 2k increase, but ultimately I’m just looking for leads on new career moves.
Customer service roles don’t pay. You need to go to corporate or tech. If you want to be customer facing do IB or sales.
Work in tech many companies are hiring if you have background knowledge of SQL and Python
I’d suggest you to move towards the commercial banking branch of the bank either as a relationship manager or analyst, you would be making at least 75k without having to do any overtime. Also, growth potential (considering you have your BA and other relevant skills) is strong.
I’m also 25, have been doing commercial credit analysis with BMO and now moved to BNP Paribas in Montreal. I’m making about 93k base + 30k-40k bonus. Work is intense and very technical , but if you like this side of finance, then you’ll love it.
It really depends on the bank and the type of deals you work on. I worked for 2 Canadian banks and bonuses usually were between 7k to 15k (depending on your performance and the bank’s performance). However the deals and clients were much smaller in size.
You would easily find 30-40k bonuses with large international banks if you work on the Global Banking side, meaning that you would be working mostly on large deals such as syndicated loans in $Bn, derivative instrument, LBO, etc.
Data Analyst pays about what you are looking for. Building out your LinkedIn account and showcase your Python projects via Github, but nothing too good that a company could steal and monetize.
Ok I think this seems like the direction I was interested in going so I’ll start doing this.
Be proactive and inquire in any training or learning courses your company offers. If your company has Analyst roles ask to shadow and request a mentor. Talk to your leadership to inquire about reporting they process in your section, ask if you could learn the reports. The most important thing is to show interest in expanding your skill set. Most companies such as my own credit union like to promote talent from within and cultivate that talent. We have a mentorship program for business analyst and there are available in house courses for coding facilitated by senior analyst. We also have partnerships with several colleges for certificates in business analytics. If there’s a specific department you’re interest in reach out to shadow even if they’re not currently hiring. Show your interest and most importantly ask questions and reiterate what you have learned while shadowing to showcase your analytical mind. Not everyone has the aptitude for analysis.
There’s business systems analyst, business operations analyst, risk analysts, financial analyst, and the list goes on. Find what you enjoy the most and hone in those skills.
Yeah Ive been taking Python, SQL and other data analytics courses through Linkedin learning which is through a platform from my work. I’ve also talked to my manager about shadowing. With the demands of my role I’m limited in how much time I can spend on that right now, but it is something I’ll be doing in the new year.
