Unfortunately, since you set the precedent of being a top performer and working late, they will continue to use you because they know you can do it. I just got out after 6 years in PA and life is so much better on the other side. I now have time to live.
Let me out of my cage
Chief
Was in your spot and realized it was time for a new job. I'm so glad i left because I got a promotion, a raise, and I work way less. Get out now.
It feels like I sold my soul. Looking for better work life balance opportunities. How is overall work life balance is corporate and VC/PE fund industry?
Hey! If you are going to a PE fund wlb can be good but try and find one that's not too big. I was at a $4bn AUM PE Fund and they had wlb. In Audit season we did worked more hours but not more than 50 hours a week. That was from Feb-April. I never had to work the weekends and pay was good. With your background you could join at a higher level. I am only saying this because now I work at a fund admin and the fund I serve exceeds $60bn in AUM and the people there work so many hours. I get emails from them at 1:00 am on a Sunday. This is year-round. I think the soft spot is a smaller fund (there are plenty) where you'll get to see other parts of the fund, join other projects outside of accounting and more wlb. I know this is related to my experience but I've been in the industry for 4 years now. Blackstone has reached out to me many times and they need 60 hours a week 3 weeks out of the month year-round.
Speak up. They will adress it. Unfortunately in this business the highest performers are the most in demand. Speak directly to a partner that you work with - guarantee that they dont want to lose you but are probably unaware if you work for multiple teams.
In-house roles have better WLB
In the same spot. Lay low and leave
Did the same thing at Deloitte. I spoke up but was alway placed on harder accounts/clients/etc….Tried to ease it back to match my peers’ performance/output and my ratings fell. You set the bar high, so that’s the expectation now.
On the bright side, when you leave, you’ll have a lot of experience to talk about in interviews. Getting a new job will be easier. Life is so much better
