I’m a counsel at a top firm. One thing I’ve noticed is that the way to get ahead (or even just to survive) is to put your head down, work hard, and not ask for anything from the partnership—not even for work unless you’re asking your own team or trusted partners.

Reaching out to people for work will make them instinctively defensive. Is that normal?

That is not normal. Not being able to reach out to partners to inform them of your availability is a sign of a toxic work environment.

I know this because as a counsel myself I worked in a group where the partners hoarded work when deal volume dropped in 2022-2023 and then pushed me and other senior team members out, all the while gaslighting us about it. Even with independent sources of work it wasn’t enough, as the partners were gatekeepers of most work still.

At my new firm, there are no such issues and it’s much more pleasant. Consider testing the market yourself.

There’s a lot of nuance to this. Good luck figuring all of this out on your own!

I have been very proactive in asking for work but this makes me second guess. Billed 60 hours last month. I felt bad for asking the staffing partner every other week but also didn’t know want else to do

What year are you?

My LinkedIn feed was absolutely filled with layoffs today. What happened? A month or two ago it was a candidate’s market and the offers were great but now everything has shifted. I was informed that I am not getting a promotion that I was gunning for, and when I pushed back about being fairly compensated for my work the response about it not being a good time to ask was really ominous. Anyone else feeling bummed?
